Has anyone tried this out yet and got it to work in NZ?
I've got the new menus on my messengers app and it tries to verify my number but I haven't received any text.

Yup, i have it working as does one of my workmates. We're talking to each other using it.

You've got to make sure you're on the beta of messages, if you skip that step it doesn't work, but it sort of seems like it might work.

I thought RCS required the carriers to support it? Or is this like iMessage where it's just Google to Google?

There's a hack at the moment where you can enable it yourself, using Google's RCS servers.

I mean it's an interesting hack and a fun experience, but RCS is (IMHO) totally doomed.  No one really wants to support it, only nerds are going to hack their phone to manually enable it, and hello entire Apple ecosystem... They're not onboard.

So it's dead in the water.  This is a bit of fun to be able to send MMS type messages, using the Android Messages app, without having to pay MMS fees.  Nothing more (again, IMHO)

There's a lot of fragmentation in messaging. WhatsApp is very popular. Facebook Messenger is popular, but I really don't like it, even with the lite version. Apple is a walled garden. Then there's signal, viber, etc that are also rans.

RCS was maybe meant to unite everyone, but I think it will come untied.

Enabled this on my P30 pro, but don't have anyone to test it with - Unless its rolled out as an official thing of the messages app and not needing to hack it to enable, don't see the uptake being massive.

I don't like any of those services (WhatsApp or FB Messenger). So I tend to use Wechat amongst the family (and of course sending all my messages to China) and for others Hangouts with the occasional Viber. For work it's SMS.

I can't even get that far, I enter my number click on verify, the tick comes up and back to the main messengers screen.

Not a single text from Google.
There's no special format for th phone number is there? Just the usual international 21XXXXXXX (with the 0 dropped off and no +64 as the app already had this when it registers from NZ)

Still reliant on phone numbers, which is a really annoying thing. If a messaging platform still doesnt keep message history centralized on a server, searchable, able to be used on any phone or PC with a login, then its IMO no better than SMS or MMS. Facebook messenger ticks all the boxes for me and is my prefered one but some people are phobic of it so have to email me instead.

Wouldn't surprise me if Google have already shut this down.

RCS is a fail in every respect - the only real reason why providers still have any interest in it is because it enables them to have a next gen messaging product they can monetise. It's pretty much a failure in every respect which is why it's failed to really gain traction, and why it'll never go anywhere

I followed the instructions here -https://www.androidpolice.com/2019/10/31/screw-your-carrier-heres-how-to-enable-rcs-in-the-messages-app-yourself-right-now/ on a second android phone just now and worked fine - Main thing was clearing the app data for carrier services.
