It's been announced that NOW NZ will be ceasing operations in 9mo time, all consumer business would be transitioned to Mercury, while business operations will cease entirely.

Don't have a non-paywalled link sorry.

End of an era, in a previous life I used to deal with Sam quite a bit and got to see behind the scenes of AirNet.

My original post was a little self centered and completely forgot about the people.

You guys are right it really really is gutting.

There is a bunch of really talented and awesome people at NOW that have been a complete god send.

Now on the Herald

Mercury says it is to close its Now telco and broadband unit with the loss of about 70 jobs in Hawke’s Bay, Christchurch, Tauranga and Hamilton.

The company stressed that it was not shutting down its broadband operations – just the Now brand.

Craig Neustroski, Mercury’s chief strategy and transformation officer, said the move was made after a review.

The wind-down of Now, which has about 15,000 residential customers and 3000 business customers, was expected to take up to nine months.

Staff were told the news yesterday.

“This is obviously tough news for the Now team, and we’re committed to working with the Now management team to support them well throughout,” he said.

The plan was to migrate Now’s residential customers to Mercury.

Now would help its business customers transition to new providers, Neustroski said.

Mercury has owned 100% of Now since 2022, after initially acquiring around half of the business in 2021.

In December 2022, Mercury acquired the remaining shares of Now that it did not already own, having made an initial investment of 48% in March 2021.

Shares in Mercury were trading at $6.81 today, up 10.9% in the past year.

Terribly sad news - Lots of old colleagues there that don't deserve a larger corporation coming along and shutting them down.

Also feel for Hamish the CEO, building the company from the ground up then having them do what they did.
