Your last paragraph. What if they released an app that streams all Sky content?

Yes. At a price point of up to $50 and able to be used on at least two devices, and with the line-up I mentioned in HD, I would be in. Otherwise, no.

Ok, current Basic is 50. Movies say 20. Rialto and Soho free. HD free maybe with a bundle or free for streaming. Maybe 60 is a stretch but its not far away. You wont need the MySky too

Getting in the zone, if it was $10-15 cheaper and the programmes (everything on basic except the freeview channels) were completely ad free then I probably would be in. And it should be at least that much cheaper, if I'm streaming using an app and my own hardware then it's cheaper for Sky - no decoder box, installer, or dish required to be supplied. But there is no way I'm paying $50 for a service where I get bombarded by ads during the show and have promos over the credits etc - not when cheaper services don't have this.

dafman:

Frustration at Sky adverts is a well-aired common theme in GZ Sky threads. And much more painful now that Netflix et al have given us a taste of what an ad-free experience looks like. Who wants a single program interrupted multiple times to endure Sky advertising itself?

It's not just the streaming services that don't have ads. Pirated product doesn't tend to either. If, as he is stated, Fellett is seriously worried about piracy and having to compete with it, you would think that the least he would do was ensure that the paid product wasn't actually worse than the bootleg alternative. And, with the current saturation-bombing level of ads, it most definitely is worse!

You appear to use bootleg because it sounds better than pirated or stolen. But they are not the same thing. Bootleggers made their own product. Pirates steal it.

It is a waste of time to compete with "bootleg", as you call it. It is a no win game competing with pirates because they drive the price towards zero and drive the convenience as high as they can given their minimal overheads and no need to meet contractual obligations. Consumers who use pirated products generally prefer not to pay anything if they can avoid it, which is generally why they are doing it in this situation. That behaviour wouldn't change even if Sky had no ads.

Some consumers download stuff as it's the only way to see it in HD.

Not all consumers that download are not prepared to pay, DC universe in SD, seriously.
As well as adds that's the level of picture Sky offers it at.
To say all downloads occur because people won't pay anything is not correct in all cases, that is stero typing people that do something into one category.

Every news article I see talks about a drastic drop in sport pricing, but unless I am missing something, the only way you pay less is if you get the basic package sans entertainment package and then pay for sport on top. Has Sport actually dropped in price and how much was it before/now?

The reason I don't know even as I have Sky with Sport, is that I am on a special bundle price which includes it.

Sport hasn't dropped in price.

Just you now can buy less to get to the sports package.
So if people liked what is in the entrainment package nothing has changed for them.
For other people who were buying just to get to Sports and other channels with rounding there's only a compulsory $25 spend now, not $50 so a saving of $25.

No, but if you get Basic (now Essential + Entertainment) + Sports (or movies), you now get Soho for free. I think the vast majority of Sky subscribers get it for the sport (I did when I was a subscriber), so they get a chance to shave costs off their monthly fee.

That's quite misleading because you aren't getting more for less, you are getting less for less. If you still want everything you had before, you are paying the same, you might get Soho for free (who cares!?).

It makes it cheaper for us as we probably want only the Essential Package.

Correct.  If you want everything you had last month then the price is the same (but now with free soho if you have entertainment and movies or sports) however a lot of people wanted sports at a cheaper price, this new options gives them this by buying the starter pack + sports which saves around $25.

People have been saying "i don't want all those channels in basic to watch sports give us a cheaper way to get sports"  This is a way for people to get cheaper sports or movies (or both with the free soho which a lot of people watch) without having to have all the channels that were the old "basic".

I have no idea what else is coming up at sky but a few would agree it's a step in the right direction.

Soho is far and away the best channel on Sky for great TV content.

No ads during programs either.

Thats it. Re @networkn, there is no change to sport but the idea here is clear, target sports viewers. There are only two users that benefit. Sports viewers who only want sport, and Basic users who are happy with the Starter lineup. The latter is pretty minimal I would think, but with FoodTV and kids channels, its possible they may get a few more on board.

Emailed them to get Entertainment and Soho removed and within a couple of hours it was confirmed as done. Now $68.51 versus $93.51. (No Soho before this change - guess it was thrown in with the Entertainment pkge).

My Netflix is now free!! And I get $7 change.

Can you do me a favour? I think you said you had Basic, Sport, HD and MySky at 93-51. Do you know the cost breakdown?
