Movieman:

I don't want the new Sky Box and I hardly ever watch anything on demand, but I am seriously thinking of cancelling my subscription after February 25th and getting the Sky Sports Now app.

How good is the app? I have fibre, so it shouldn't have any buffering problems.

I have found the Tizen version of the app (on my Samsung TV) to be excellent.  There are also versions that run on smartphones and you can watch it via a PC browser and I understand apps are available for other smart TVs.  Streaming has its downsides though - if you want to use fast-forward in particular it is much less responsive, but you get used to it.  I watch live sport, but always about 20 minutes late, so I can fast-forward through the halftime break to be near-live.

Dingbatt:

In the email, they refer to my “black Sky box”. Both my Pace MySky box and Kaon box are black, so which one are they referring to?

If it’s the Kaon, then I never use it for on demand anyway. I do use it when we go to the family bach though, which has no internet. Will the flash new box they are offering for free work without an internet connection? Not for On Demand, but even to just get it working?

I wish Sky would just be honest, rather than make out they are doing me a favour.

I also go that email. It refers to all the old Black Sky Boxes and is just part of a strategy to make the new white boxes more appealing. I rarely use on demand as the quality is relatively poor, and the new boxes still have many teething problems. I’m unlikely to jump on to it until they fix most of those problems and/or start offering 4K quality sport.

Maybe I’m reading more into it than I should but anyone see the new satellite ad on sky and the mention that they will be checking it remotely for the new box?

Does this indicate that they have anytime remote access to the new box?

I don’t have one at the moment but if this is the case I’m even less likely to upgrade and if forced to it might end upon a dedicated VLAN.

I haven’t seen that Ad, but I was a little surprised when Sky asked me to do the “888” test related to the new satellite (which in my case failed) because they initially said they would contact customers to discuss test results. In the end, they just sent me another email stating that they had got the results directly from my Black Box.

So, they at least have a way of extracting information from any of their Boxes connected to the internet.

Interestingly I am seeing an 888 ad during the tennis on a new box, but 888 isn't there :)

Do you have the whitebox?? if so no need to test for 888 its not needed as whitebox can stream without a dish.

I came across this public Facebook group dedicated to Sky TV complaints / issues:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1260078404657179

Another place to vent frustrations or share / pick up some good tips.

This is a good alternative to the problematic new Sky box or as an alternative when having satellite issues:

You can get Sky Go on any TV by downloading the Kodi app on your smart TV or by plugging in to the HDMI slot an Android streaming device like the new Google streamer, download the Kodi app and then getting a Sky Go add-on.

You will have to Google "Sky Go NZ Kodi add on" to find how to do it.

And then away you go, watching live TV and on demand programs on your TV through Sky Go.

Thanks for pointing this out. I successfully installed Kodi and the Sky Go add-on. All good, except that I get most of the sports channels in 480 SD resolution. Yuk! Any ideas how to fix this?

The developer of those plugins SlyGuyUK or http://www.matt huisman.nz have now made it in a way that in order for you to get high resolution, you got to have to support their projects by making a small donation.

Just to report back - I made the small donation, got a Supporter ID code in return, and now get the HD streams. All good, the set up works nicely, including programme guide too...

PS I'm a bit annoyed with Sky, having supported them for something like 30 years, that they now turn off the On  Demand feature, just because I see no good reason to 'upgrade' to the new box. Reduced service, but no corresponding change to the subscription cost. Not very customer friendly to my mind!

They turned off the 'On Demand' facility used by blackbox decoders because that used used legacy servers IIRC.

It may depend on which device you're using.

Android or other.

I'm using the new Google TV Streamer plugged in to my TV.

I have the Kodi app downloaded on that and the Sky Go add on.

I'm streaming the sports channels live at 1280 x 720 which is HD, though not Full HD which is 1920 x 1080

Out of interest, are you now streaming the sports channels live in Full HD which is 1920 x 1080 ?

I'm currently getting them at 1280 x 720 which is HD, though not Full HD, without making a donation.

I'll make a donation if it means getting Full HD.
