Ok, that's true, but lets be frank, who would pay $20 for the MySky box, let alone the subs for Basic to watch FTA and a few other channels? Most use a Freeview box. Its all about sport these days, you like that type of content or not.

That's viewers, not subscribers. Cos Sky clearly doesn't have 1.6m subscribers. What's Roy Morgans assumption for viewers per hh?

So how many subscribers? Cos it's not 2m, is it?

Sky pay for SD steams, i.e., news, documentary etc. are fed to Sky in SD. Channel 5 is local so could playout in HD but they don't have the equipment. HD versions of NatGeo and Discovery are actually different products with different content.

Ive read here that they cant output more HD due to satellite restrictions. Whatever they have that is in HD that isn't "satellited" in HD, you would expect it will be over broadband.

It's already been stated on here many times that Sky can shift 5 transponders to DVB-S2. Shift increases effective bandwidth by 100% (also change of codec from mpeg2 to H.264). Hence why they can drop from 7 to 4 transponders in Optus contract. They choose not to as would be pointless since they have no HD versions of the bulk of the channels due to frugality. And no playout equipment either.

Me, lol.

When no deals on I just use digital rental about $20 a month per box.
Sky Box way superior to Freeview box’s on market, and record a lot of Freeview.

Sky Box very quiet and can record more channels at once then latest Freeview recorder on market.

Edit: if TiVo was still around it might be different, that box was fantastic.

I'll guess it's because the incremental revenue from advertising in HD (cf SD) plus the incremental revenue from additional hd subscribers is less than the cost of hd content (cf sd). It would be highly likely that a business case has looked at the differential cashflows from such a proposal.
Wrt DVB-S2, who knows. All the old boxes have been swapped out, maybe waiting on new CEO signoff?

It's interesting that often when I'm amongst a group of people discussing Netflix and Sky that one or two admit that they pay for Netflix but haven't viewed anything on it for months. Can't recall such statements in relation to Sky.

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.

That could be due to the price difference - spending $12 per month on something you don't use is very different to $100 or whatever Sky is these days.

Actually, the main reason I dropped Sky about four years ago was the realization that the only things we were watching on it were on the Freeview channels, ie we hadn't watched anything on the Sky service itself for several months. I guess we could have dropped to the $20 recorder only tariff, but history of paying for the basic package, then more for the recorder, then more again for HD (which as it turned out, wasn't even necessary for free channels) just made me feel they'd had enough of my money already.

And that's absolutely fine. What annoys me is this who ditch Sky then rant about it. Ive got Sky, Netflix, Lightbox, Curiositystream. I don't watch much SVOD but its there. Sky is sport, but I enjoy the doco channels and CNN, so it suits me. Those that dont want Sky, the content doesn't suit, why are they here complaining?? I have a Honda car, a Suzuki motorcycle , you dont see me searching for forums to bag every other car and motorcycle brand.
