Just installed the New Sky Box at my parent’s place. Their old black MySKY box must have been 15+ years old. Surprisingly that the HDD lasted so long.

My only thoughts after a few days of using it is that the UI is glacially slow - unacceptably so. Also, the boundaries of the UI do not seem right on this TV of a similar vintage (probably going on 15+ years, too). The UI looks like it almost (but not quite) will cut off at the edges.

doobre:

I would not recommend it for Plex or Kodi if you’re in to high quality playback with ir without Hi-res audio.

Yes the apps can be installed in the box, but playback performance is not up to standard AFAIAC.

Even the YouTube app is flakey at best.

my two cents, cheers CD

I guess I never noticed, because I play audio through a dedicated HDMI recorder/audio amplifier

Yes me also, but that doesn't help the sky box perform as it was expected to (ex: like other Android boxes of today)

cheers CD

I am still sticking with my Sky black box for the foreseeable future. I did however, join Sky Broadband some time ago and I signed up for their Fibre Everyday plan which was $80 per month for 12 months, if you were a Sky subscriber. It has recently gone up to $90, so I looked at possible ways to reduce my monthly costs. Their Fibre Starter plan is $55 per month for the first 12 months for subscribers, then it goes up to $60. This plan has speeds of 100Mbps download/20mbps uploads which I'm sure is fast enough for my wife and I.

It's a saving of $30 per month. I have switched to the Starter plan and haven't noticed any problems yet. It could be an option for some of our members. Don't pay for more than you need.

Sadly, our old faithful black MySky HDi box has a hard drive fault. It will work but only after 6 minutes of chuntering to itself on a power on, and needs to be powered off afterwards (at the wall). I understand that Sky aren't fixing the old Pace boxes any more. I assume there's no hope and I'm going to have to go for a new box?  Doesn't exactly sound an enticing deal... but it's just about worth it for the cricket, rugby, and Premiership footage, if only because Sky's production values are actually good and the coverage of eg test cricket was so much better than Spark Sport.

I assume I can move it from the living room where the satellite cabling is to the media room on the opposite side of the house (wired ethernet) so I'm looking upon that as a win...

While Sky will try very hard to get you to accept the "upgrade" to the new White Box, there is still a Black Box option. It will be a refurbished Kaon unit, smaller form-factor and slightly more responsive than the Pace models, but otherwise operationally identical (even uses the same remote as the Pace). If your current Pace Box is a 1Tb Sky+ version, you may have to accept a lower capacity disk (500Gb).

About 2 years ago I went for this option, because I was not (and still am not) satisfied that the White Box is a better option.

Good Luck!

Surely they will replace the box if it is faulty. I signed up today and I had a choice of a box or a pod.

Not the elderly Pace box.  They will push the whitebox or Pod, and may well supply the Kaon black box on request.

I got a Kaon (500Gb) on request and have had it for the last 4-5 years. Still very happy with it and I know you can still request them over the newer boxes.

Last week when I resigned for another 12 months I was half expecting to be pushed into a new white box, but nobody said a word and was happy to keep the Kaon. Although the removal of on demand is still a PITA IMO

Yep, I requested a swap from Pace to Kaon a couple of months ago, via Facebook chat, and it went flawlessly.  The UI on the Kaon is a lot snappier that the old Pace.

The Kaons are good but of course don't support on demand though you can still access this via sky go.

My white skybox has started having no audio when switching from apps/streamed content to satellite content. It used to do it occasionally and could be fixed turning it off with the remote for a minute, now it needs a full power cycle.

Satellite has sound on start up, open Kodi and watch something fine, go back to TV and no sound. HBO Max content has sound, youtube has sound, even system sounds. If I remove the coax from the back of the box I get sounds once it switches to streaming it off the internet, plug it back in and no sound again... Can only get sound on satellite back by restarting the box or physically unplugging the HDMI cable and plugging it back in. I'm guessing it's an audio focus thing but it's super weird. Anyone else have this issue at all?

Yep, same issue here after exiting back to satellite from a Plex app session.
