Jase2985: should have done it pre RWC because post will just be tooo late for many including myself

Me too. As someone else said, Sky is good value if you have the use case. I love the docs, sport, HD, recording convenience, kids loved the kids channels, Animal Planet was a biggie for her. Wife loves the food channels.  But now, i am the only user it seems, daughter uses Netflix, wife doesnt watch food channel anymore, I have options for F1 and MotoGP if need be. Sky has RWC on Prime. Lightbox. Netflix. Im about to remove MySkyHDi box, and a Panny BR/HDD Freeview recorder, and replace that with a T2200. Ask wife if she prefers Panny in bedroom instead of the Tivo that forgets stuff from time to time. PS4 has LB/NF, so will my upcoming Apple TV4 hopefully soon. Saving circa $80 per month, freeing up one HT HDMI

But I don't see the churn hitting big time yet for Sky. If NF/LB advertised heavily, this is how easy and cheap it is, then maybe

I get all of that, except for the bit about replacing the Panny box with the T2200. As a Panny owner contemplating restructuring his setup, I'm curious as to why - is it just the Freeview+ functionality or is there something I'm missing?

Freeview Plus, and I hate the FV Ui on the Panny.

l43a2: will the new sky boxes be in HD?

The new Sky boxes support DVB-S2 H.264 and most likely H.265 and hence support the migration of all the DVB-S mpeg2 transponders. The bandwidth claimed by such will allow another 20 HD channels to be added overnight (even keeping SD simulcast).

So will subscriptions all go up by $10 if HD is standard?

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Only 4 x half transponders are HD capable as they have been shifted to DVB-S2 H.264. The very point of upgrading is that the legacy boxes are totally incapable of receiving DVB-S2 H.264 and/or outputting anything other than 576i.

To shift all the channels to HD however would require an H.265 solution, meaning even the mySky HDi/+ would need replacing.

The New boxes can still be software tweaked to only output SD, if you don't pay $ for the ticket

With 4K gaining momentum, HD shouldn't be considered an additional cost upgrade anymore. It's not 2010 anymore.

Agree, the HD ticket should be a UHD ticket in 2015 but sky are useless so that will never happen.

I wouldn't call them useless. Sky are great at maximizing their revenue from a captive audience.

The problem is that the market is becoming less "captive".

The challenge is going to be converting the captive market into a willing market that perceives they are getting value for money.

I agree that standard 1080i HD is no longer considered a premium product in the general market.

Its premium compared with the SD mpeg2 muck they churn out at the moment.

It amazes me in this day and age how Sky can still get away charging an extra $10 for HD where with  everyone else   it's normal..
