Thanks again for registering your interest in the new Sky Box.

We’re just putting the finishing touches on the new Sky Box and will be sending you a special Sky Rewards offer shortly, keep an eye on your inbox!

In the meantime we thought you might be interested in the top questions we're being asked about the new Sky Box...

When will the new Sky Box be available?

From April we will launch the new Sky Box to Sky customers and to people like you who have registered their interest.

Will I need a smart TV?

Absolutely not. The beauty of the new Sky Box is it works on all TVs, which means you won’t need to upgrade to a new smart TV to enjoy it.

How will the new Sky Box transform my viewing experience?

With the new Sky Box all your Sky channels, free to air channels, and your apps are in one place, so you’ll spend less time searching and more time watching the sport and entertainment you love.

Everything is accessible from your Sky remote and, you can use your voice to search what's on now, go to your home screen, open apps and more. Just ask Google.

The new Sky Box home page makes searching simple.

What happens to my existing My Sky recordings?

When you upgrade to the new Sky Box you won’t be able to transfer recordings from your current Sky Box to the new Sky Box.

If you choose to keep your current Sky Box as a multi-room option (monthly fees apply), it’ll still have all your recordings so you’ll be able to watch these whenever you like.

My current sky box is quite bulky, is the new Sky Box?

The new Sky Box is sleek and compact, we think you'll love it!

The dimensions are 210mm x 170mm x 45mm, that’s around half the size of your current Sky Box.

We’ll be in touch soon with more details of how you can get a new Sky Box.

Thanks
The Sky Crew

Received two emails today

1 Tracking information for my SkyPod. It has been picked up by courier in Auckland

2 Information on the need to make sure my Sky account is linked the account # given plus other information related to the Skypod.

3 $101.98 debited to my credit card two days ago.

I am probably not going to connect it until the last week in March as the better half in the house wants to eek out VTV until the last minute

I also got an email this morning saying my Pod will be despatched by the end of March, although it hasn't been despatched yet.

I was a bit disappointed by this:

"Currently TVNZ channels, including TVNZ 1, TVNZ 2, and Duke can be found on the TVNZ+ app, but not on the Sky Pod TV Guide. We’ll let you know if the TVNZ channels become available on the Sky Pod TV Guide at a later date."

"If" they become available? That really doesn't sound good, and it sounds like it just isn't a finished product. One of the key attractions of Sky for me is being able to browse many channels without having to constantly go in and out of Apps.

Hmmm so if I read correctly the latest email Sky have sent me regarding the 'Sky Pod', TVNZ channels won't be available directly from the normal program guide you have to go into the TVNZ+ app to access. That along with no 4k streaming option (which the Vodafone TV device appeared to have) is a bit of a issue (unless of course I am completely misreading the email).

I'm guessing this is a key reason for the delay. It isn't ready, but now they have to rush it out with unfinished software.

Could be right. Smart thing may have been to just leverage the Vodafone TV box and software.

The email does also say we can switch the Pod for the new box if getting TVNZ channels is important, but then I'd lose the rewind capability. It sounds like I can choose any one of two incomplete solutions. Oh dear.

Yeah, same for me, seems a big step UP in costs, and a big step BACK in functionality.....

Before the Sky Zelots blast me... my reasons are:

I dont watch sky channels, only free channels
I need a monthly Sky Sub to use the POD, which is a huge cost over VTV
Plus its NOT 4k
Plus even with all that extra cost, I can't use it to rewind shows on the free channels!

I was thinking I might have to bite the bullet to go to a monthly sub with Sky to maintain the VTV features. It was almost worth it, but was a close call.

Now, given the above details, just using free apps on the TV is, well free. And has better functionality and quality.
Not sure where they are aiming this pod at marketwise? Existing Sky subscribers only? Seems they are a dying breed. Thought they would be wanting to gain subs.

Half arsing things is a NZ trait :) We do it all the time and seem to be proud of it. I wish we would just do things right first time.......oh well.....

So if I have the new SKY POD I won't have the ability to watch TV 1, 2 ,3 etc like I do with Vodafone TV?

Me too.

I think Sky is being, well, Sky as usual.

If they take a "Wait and see what functionality we MIGHT add" approach. Then I see a whole bunch of potential subscribers taking a "Will wait till I see it has the functions I require before I subscribe" approach. Then at least half of these people will find a satisfactory non-sky solution after VTV is switched off and before Sky gets everything working properly. Which means that the Pod will never take off in NZ.

If they just said "Keep your VTV" and pay a sub for Sky Starter to keep it going, I would probably subscribe tomorrow.

I dont have the Pod, but I assume you can watch those channels (At much less quality than VFTV), but you cant record, pause, restart programs, go back in time 3 days etc like you can with VFTV.

So it would be the same as just watching the live channels. (Just like back in 2005) but with a fancy new box and subscription you didn't have before.

TVNZ+ app streams are good. The Sky streams of TVNZ channels are of lower quality than Freeview terrestrial, also recordings of One News show evidence of compression artefacts as if the stream has been down sampled on recording. 5+ years since I've had a Sky decoder though so have no reference.

Certainly the Android box is nothing special and as to why one would put satellite tuners in it is beyond me.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Just called SKY and it won't be available like it's on VTV now. If you watch like Sports on TV 52 you won't be able to go to the free channels. Need to change to a new app to watch the free channels..

It doesn't appear to be a capability issue - but rather a licensing issue.

i.e. TVNZ is not allowing Sky to stream their channels through the Sky Pod, because they want people to use their app.

This was one of the main beefs I believe people had with the VTV box - you couldn't 'record' TV1 News.

This might be a deal-breaker for the pod.
