(ducks despite paying for sky sports and having a season pass the see local super15 team previous 5 years)
That's what I did when I dropped Sky Sports. We got two season tickets to the local Super 15 Team (Hurricanes). I must confess I am really enjoying the atmosphere of live games. And I am happy to pay for my own entertainment, I don't expect the taxpayer to buy my ticket for me either. (As for the ABs, the delayed coverage on Prime is enough for me).
As for the taxpayer being pinged to pay for other entertainment (ballet, the GC on the telly etc) I don't support that either. I would rather the funding was reallocated to health, education and emergency housing, given back to overburdened wage and salary earners via a tax cut if it isn't needed for these things.
If entertainment can't survive on its own two feet then tough - plenty of people are willing to stump up big bucks for stuff they actually want to see ($100+ for Springsteen concerts etc), and sponsors are often willing to put up money for advertising/PR reasons. If consumers/sponsors aren't prepared to pay sufficiently for amusement and entertainment then that tells me all I need to know about whether it should survive. Same with NZ - it is fundamentally a non-essential commercial business with professional highly-paid employees, and it should live or die in the market and not expect to suckle on the taxpayers teat.
