(ducks despite paying for sky sports and having a season pass the see local super15 team previous 5 years)

That's what I did when I dropped Sky Sports. We got two season tickets to the local Super 15 Team (Hurricanes). I must confess I am really enjoying the atmosphere of live games. And I am happy to pay for my own entertainment, I don't expect the taxpayer to buy my ticket for me either. (As for the ABs, the delayed coverage on Prime is enough for me).

As for the taxpayer being pinged to pay for other entertainment (ballet, the GC on the telly etc) I don't support that either. I would rather the funding was reallocated to health, education and emergency housing, given back to overburdened wage and salary earners via a tax cut if it isn't needed for these things.

If entertainment can't survive on its own two feet then tough - plenty of people are willing to stump up big bucks for stuff they actually want to see ($100+ for Springsteen concerts etc), and sponsors are often willing to put up money for advertising/PR reasons. If consumers/sponsors aren't prepared to pay sufficiently for amusement and entertainment then that tells me all I need to know about whether it should survive. Same with NZ - it is fundamentally a non-essential commercial business with professional highly-paid employees, and it should live or die in the market and not expect to suckle on the taxpayers teat.

I am generally not a fan of the arts etc, but I think it's folly to dismiss the benefits to the population of investment in cultural and arts events. There are well established studies, and plenty of history to show what happens if you deprive a population of culture and arts. Not everyone can afford that (some are struggling to get basics together).

As to how much or what, I am not qualified to know, but I don't think funnelling all money from arts/culture into healthcare and education is the answer.

As many of us had eluded to - (and said Amazon could do it, but why/how) May be a stream only deal given the OSB (source content in this case) is owned by Sky and current platform does the work for the other 5 nations to do their own commentary on now

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11919649

Amazon obviously have the money to build a similar competing company, but why bother? And even allowing for the fact that they work on the strategy of winning market share at any cost and then driving profitability later, it still wouldn't make sense for Amazon to get into the filming and production side of broadcasting.

And that's because it's unlikely in the extreme that they have any interest in anything other than the international rights to the All Blacks.

Sky can own the production, and all the rugby rights in New Zealand and clip the international rights ticket as the host broadcaster. It would be cheaper and more effective for Amazon to simply pay Sky to provide access to the broadcast.

Amazon can the use their global reach to then allow people all around the world to live stream All Blacks tests. That is surely the market they want because the size of it is potentially enormous.

I think the day spark zero rates Netflix and light box on some of their monthly mobile plans. It's going to be a huge hit for sky

If amazon or someone else won the right to rugby here they would have to get up their own outside broadcasting teams. But I wonder how much of a issue that would be.

Is there enough work in nz to support two outfits?

Realistically would the new outfit just advertise for camera staff, etc and just get the sky people to move over ?

ie Would the outside broadcasting staff really see the jobs are existing for very long if sky lost the rugby. Why would they stay?

Would Justin Marshall and the other ex all black commentators choose loss of jobs/status on national tv or would they just move over to the new outfit. Would there be any reason to be "Loyal" to sky after they lose rugby.

Most subscribers who have Sky aren't there for the movies, TV shows etc. They're there for the sports.

I for one would be happy if Justin Marshall wasn't commentating either way sky or amazon :)

If thats true Sky should release its grapple hold on high quality overseas programming so Netflix can stream them.

We don't even know which rights Amazon might be interested in. Global iptv rights, NZ rights, etc  its all split into rights packages

It has even been suggested they will leave NZ rights and broadcast delivery to SKY in exchange for them continuing producing the coverage and being host broadcaster.

If Amazon won the rights, Sky wont be there as they have no rights to be there, so they wont need to move over. Amazon, in addition to the rights would need to pay for commentators, pre show, post show, all of which is great value. Or just save money by relaying a video feed with some other commentator from some other country.

Strange comment. If you are into NF or LB you should already be zero rated, i.e. Unlimited

NF has exclusives, as everyone has. I do see your point, but they all play the same game. If you can only buy Moro bars from my dairy, you will shop at my dairy.
