I ended up switching back . I really want to support nz but sky really needs to lift their game on digital quality.

The problem is the ATV not Sky; as pointed out all PAL games are recorded at 25/50 not 30/60 and so the ATV if set at 60hz is having to insert additiional frames to acheive the 60hz its set to. Setting it to 50 will solve this. If sky decide to insert frames itself it will screw up their sky satellite feeds (the sky box defaults to 50hz) and would introduce stutter as well.

Playing on my ATV and the NRL is looking a little juddery. Is Sky still steaming in 50fps as opposed to 60? I might need to play with the ATV settings but its a pain as it then makes every other app look worse

Sky will always stream at 50 FPS. Why would they stream at 60? It would zero sense when literally 99% of their content is native 25FPS / 50FPS

Because the it’s the internet and 30/60 is expected. It doesn’t matter to me how they film content, they should be doing any conversion on their end to 60fps. I shouldn’t have to fiddle with my device settings to get smooth content when every other app works as expected.

What makes you think things should be 30/60 because it's own the Internet? I don't have a single PC that runs at 60Hz refresh rate. Everything runs at 50Hz. IMHO it's quite simply one of the worst things in the world to be running displays at 60Hz in a 50Hz country under most artificial light. I feel sorry for your eyes!

Do you have a link to Kayo broadcasting all content in 60FPS because I can see no reference to that anywhere. It would make zero sense to be broadcasting local Australian content recorded and mastered in 25/50 FPS (depending on whether it's sourced at 1080i or 1080p) and then have to reencode this at 60 FPS for streaming.

Asking somebody I know (who works in the industry in AU) he told me Kayo streams natively, ie most is 50 FPS but some NTSC sourced content may be at 60 FPS if it is not remastered for local playout on Foxtel as well.

I understand what you are saying but I also don’t get why the SkyGo app mirrored to my AppleTV looks so much better than than watching the same content on the SkySport Now app. Where is the quality fix happening? On my phone playing the content or at the providers end? If at providers end, then why not also done for the SkySport now app on the ATV?

This isn't a debate about whether 50 or better than 60 (because there isn't an answer to that). It's merely pointing out that native 50 FPS content will play correctly on a 50Hz display, and 60 FPS content will play correctly on a 60Hz display. Running 50 on a 60 or 60 on a 50 will result in issues.

Most of the world is 50Hz, hence 25/50 FPS content is the norm across most of the world and broadcast TV.

I tried the built in app on Samsung tv as well was just as bad as the Apple TV. I shouldn’t have to change the settings just for one app where the competitions and every other app works great. If sky could provide the same quality I would stick with them

The debate here is running a pc at 50hz on a TV as opposed to 60... you only use your pc for viewing broadcast content at 50hz? If not set it 60hz or higher...

To confuse matters more, why does Spark Sport run at 60fps across their platform which consists of feeds from all around the world?

Are you saying that Sky streams at 50 because a lot of their content is sourced from regions where 50fps/hz is the norm?

Can’t see any difference in picture for when playing ones that support 60 Hz.

I believe SSN still stream at 25FPS. They have done since the Fanpass days and I don’t believe anything has changed.

I have an Apple TV 4K. I set the video format to 4k SDR 50Hz and set match content and frame rate on. The Apple TV by default tries to use HDR because they want the menus in HDR but who cares they look great in SDR. SDR content in HDR can look awful. So changing to SDR means SDR content plays in the correct dynamic range. Note that the chroma then goes to 4:4:4 as well if your tv supports it. If an app doesn’t switch frame rate, which seems to happen with the likes of the tv3 app then it plays at 50Hz which is what it should.

Sky Sport Now looks fine to me. I also make sure that motion flow settings on the tv are off so the tv isn’t trying to insert frames.

All the movie streaming apps I use (Netflix, Disney, Prime video etc) swap to HDR or Dolby Vision and the correct frame rate correctly based on content. So all good there.

What Kharris said, default settings on Apple TV are not optimal. People like different things, but I have mine set same as Kharris.
