I picked up a pair of these off amazon.com.au in anticipation of the Sky Pod and also for my Fire TV Stick.
Quite handy if you already have HDMI cables wired into the wall, or the right length and you don't want to buy a male to female HDMI plug, which I found quite limited in terms of length and quality.

Tatou:

I was worried about the puck hanging at 90 degrees off the cable ( the HDMI socket is midway up the back of the TV) and also worried about the remote sensor being hidden behind the TV.

Isn't the remote bluetooth, so line of sight isn't necessary?

Aha

Re Bluetooth I had forgotten that

My connection is ethernet so there is another cable hanging down from the puck

So I have connected up my SkyPod and one word…. Awful. The picture is basically unwatchable, especially when it comes to sport, the frame rate is off, there are micro stutters and almost imperceptible flickering (enough to make me nauseous). It’s nothing to do with my connection (fibre 1 gig/ 500 mbps) given I had no issues with Voda and none with other streaming services even at 4k.

The quality is nowhere near that of the Vodafone TV box, that had a rock solid picture, fast channel change response and just worked. The SkyPod is like stepping back 20 years technology wise.

Looks like a phone call to Sky tomorrow to try and convince them to replace this lemon with their new satellite box without paying any extra for installation (wish me luck).

That is disappointing to say the least.

I will see what its like in 6 days. Installing next Sunday

If you could get UKTV streaming then Sky would be on perilous grounds.

it might just be that I’m somehow sensitive to their picture but I just tried the tvnz app via the SkyPod and believe it or not that had a better picture and seemingly higher frame rate than the Sky channels. I looked at the A league replay on sky sport 7 just now and it still looked bad, almost like it was dropping frames. The only reason I have Sky is for the football, if they can’t improve on this then I will need to look at ‘alternative’ ways of streaming it.

I have the sky pod as a replacement to Vodafone tv. It is connected via cat6 Ethernet (old Telstra Clear network, unlimited, 800mbs). It is attached to a Denon 3700h and Panasonic 4k OLED tv. It wouldn't work when I tried connecting it via my old Vodafone TV HDMI cable (1.5m, 8k) and a cheap HDMI male to male adapter. It works fine when plugged direct into the Denon. The picture quality is on par with Vodafone tv. Tvnz app is better. The major let down is the remote. Channel switching is slow. You can't restart and have to rewind. Navigation and the use of the remote is a big learning curve and not intuitive. It occassionally locks on a channel and has to be physically restarted to continue. Sometimes it gets 'lost' and you struggle to resume channel selection by entering numbers. It sometimes has trouble starting and locking onto the sky network. The bluetooth connection is good and better than ir. Unfortunately I can no longer use my harmony remote. Sofabaton says they have a solution. Sky said they did lots of r&d to get a good solution. It sucks.

The connection to my Denon is more stable than Vodafone TV BOX. With the Vodafone tv box the Denon struggled to consistently detect Dolby audio.

I tried casting skygo from my tablet to the device and couldn't get it to work. I can cast skygo to my Chromecast.

I can only get the voice commands to work when accessing the internet.

it’s a sort of juddering effect with fast motion. I’ve tried on a different hdmi interface, used a pass through connector with a known good hdmi cable annd also played around with the pod setup but still have the issue. I have also made sure that all video processing on the tv is off. The picture itself looks good it is just motion that is off.

I’ve agreed with Sky to try another pod just in case, if that doesn’t work I’m going to try the new Sky box but I have told them I won’t pay the extra $100 for it as by that stage I would consider the Sky pod not fit for purpose under the cga.

Why are you using an HDMI cable? Have you tried plugging it direct to the TV?

Of course, that’s how I originally connected it.

I also got my Pod today, so I’ve only used it for a couple of hours as yet.

It certainly has problems. I’m hoping the hardware itself is fundamentally capable and that the problems can be reduced over time with software updates.

The laggy interface is annoying, and the lack of TVNZ channels (other than within the TVNZ app) is going to grate (although I know that particular problem is out of Sky’s control).

It’s Android, so it’s always going to be a bit muddled and the user interface will never match Apple TV for intuitiveness and reliability, but I’m hopeful it can be improved to the point where it will become at least adequate. I just need an interface that gets me to the content I want to watch without a lot of messing about, and it’s definitely got some distance to go before it reaches that point.

I’ll stick with it for now and give Sky a chance to sort out the main issues.

Silverdavid: You can't restart and have to rewind.

It’s certainly not as easy as with Vodafone TV, but you can restart. It’s under “more options” when you’re viewing the on-screen information about a programme.
