Think I should start me a business turning SKY dishes into woks or modern art sculptures. I'll make a fortune.
Sky have a sleight-of-hand thing going... They blame piracy because, without sport, they can't compete with netflix, hbo, iplayer, but they don't really want to call out for more geo-blocking efforts because they'd A) probably lose in court, and 2) more people would hate them and ditch them.
So it's PIRACY, ARrrrh!

They dont compete with Netflix. If they did they would show Sky Movies at $14 with OLD movies and OLD TV series.
The problem here is too many equate Pay TV at $14 for "everyfink"
Basic should be $20, sport should be whatever it needs to be, thats it. Sport at $70? $90? $120? Whatever it needs to be

They don't compete with "anything", because they're SKY. Movies are nothing.
They are competing with netflix etc, because people ditch them for netflix etc. Old movies mean jack.
And I might not be strictly speaking NZ netflix.

Correct. Who gets Sky Movies now? It was a biggie, now its history.

No they arent. If your into movies, 4000 of them, most of them old, Sky doesnt have that. All NF has is old movies and old TV
And I might not be strictly speaking NZ netflix.
Too easy mate! :-)
NF if you are into older movies and TV its all there, thats not on Sky. If you are into a wide plethora of content for the old, young, and of many genres, Sky does that.
End of the day if you dont have an interest in Sky content, dont get it. Easy. If you do, get it, same applies to any offering.

Um, have you ever looked at Netflix?

I think you are being a bit harsh on Netflix. I have been looking at it as an option for when I ditch Sky, and they have a whole lot more than just old movies and old TV. There is quite a catalog of movies, TV and comedy etc, some of which is quite recent. Particularly if you use a VPN and get the "full fat" version of Netflix, not the crippled "NZ lite" one. Moreover, most of the "new" movies on Sky premiere seem to be at a year old (which is no better than Netflix), and it's a bit one-sided to hold up Netflix's TV offering and pan it as old - when the comparison includes channels such as Jones 1 and 2.
If someone is in to movies and TV, rather than sport, Netflix and its ilk seem to be a perfectly reasonable alternatives to Sky. And, on the face of it, much better value.
A lot of Sky content isn't even current..for example the new season of Gold Rush on Discovery has been on for weeks, and yet Sky will probably not start to screen it until January or Feb.
True fans of the show won't muck around waiting that long.
They need to have much more content available same day.. that reduces peoples desire to search online for it.

I fully agree. No one would pay for Sky for movies, thats for sure, why pay for Basic and Movies when you can get NF for 1/3 th price of Basic, so IMO thats why they dont compete. Sky has a much wider range of genres to appeal to anyone, families especially. Sport, well thats Sky's big thing which also doesnt compete with NF. The convenience of one box, recording, OD, SkyGo, and from what I gather, new features coming, make it an overall ok package. Its not for binging movies big time, although OD and box sets do allow TV series binging. Sky is a party pack of lollies, NF has less types of lollies but more of them
If everything was made available worldwide at the same time, at comparable, reasonable cost, I suspect much of the "piracy" would just go away.
It will never be wholly eliminated, of course, but most users will pay to get what they want provided they are getting it at the same time as everyone else elsewhere in the world, at the same cost or thereabouts.
Logically there is absolutely NO reason whatsoever I can conceive of for Program A not to be available in London, Auckland and LA on the same day. None.
To be fair ...
old movies , thats not Skys fault .
They get the movies after movie companies have reamed very cent possible out of them : through theatres & DVD's .
That business model goes back to year dot, just as 30 years ago (and before) , local movie theatres couldnt get any new releases
untill the 2 big players in NZ had reamed every cent from them.
I used to pay for sky, and still had to download to get current TV shows . Or wait 6-12 months for sky to show them .
Not just sky, free TV was the same.
Downloads are changing that, some of my fav programs are now shown within a week of release. And they advertise these programs as being
shown the same week as release . The realize they cant sit on programs for months any more . Some programs were less relevant by the time they were finally shown in NZ

unfortunately it's not possible because of the consumer power/purchase power is so different between regions and countries.
Just an example of no roaming in EU. mobile service providers instantly complained that price for the same service in eastern EU 3-4 times cheaper than in western. I nothing could stop people buying Vodafone package in Belgrade and use it in Berlin. EU had to regulate it that person can't be on free-roaming for over 90 days (or less).
Same for sports and movies packages.

blame Australia for that , we get the Australian version of most channels so we are at their mercy when programs screen,
Common sense is not as common as you think.
It is only a matter of time before popular sports go direct to customers through their own direct subscriptions and apps.
I buy WRC Plus each January for 29 Euros, I get live stages and ondemand, plus in car footage from multiple cameras, live timing, and results. WRC had 600+ millions viewers this year, if only 10 million of those subscribed to WRC plus then that is a pretty good amount of money going direct to WRC.
There are a few other motorsports I would pay for if they had Android TV apps and direct subscriptions, F1 for one. V8 Supercars, maybe.

I see no reason why that should (at least) affect the timeliness of release.
As to mobile companies specifically, I can't really see why I, as a VF customer, should not have access free of charge other than my normal charges to all Vodafone networks worldwide. We are slowly getting there with the $5/day roaming but if VF (and others) can offer free roaming throughout the EU for 90 days, I see no particular reason why they can't offer free roaming worldwide (at least on their own networks) for 90 days.
