Crappy satellite? You haven't used it. Its extremely reliable, everyone knows that.

How can they embrace the opportunity? Factor in the Optus contract if and when you reply.

Are you kidding? A decent storm and it's out. Fibre eats it alive without the need of the ugly, outdated non-UHD non HDMI-CEC decoder.

The Optus contract is part of their problem. Why bother when you can deliver over fibre (or VDSL)

Sky should have seen this coming and started up their own internet business about a decade ago.

A decade ago people in NZ would not take up SVOD full time. If they dumped satellite then, no subscribers, then a slow take up of this new fandangled idea. And BB wasnt the VDSL/Fibre coverage that it is now.

The Optus contract is certainly their problem, it expires I think 2018. So far thy have developed SVOD for when they can satellite, and go SVOD only. Unless they get a really good deal on Optus as its already been fully amortized. The only choice is bite the bullet till then. Or they could have halved prices, but if that was a better option to retain subscribers they would have done that

As to satellite, its 99.99% reliable for me, everything just works. I cant recall the last rain fade I got.

UHD? True. But at 1080i on my Plasma, its excellent

Not suggesting they dump satellite a decade ago, but they should have started planning for it a decade ago. They didn't and now they are floundering and being left in the dust by the streaming services.

IMO they have been preparing. They have Neon, Fanpass, Sky On Demand, its all there.MySky is internet ready. But they also have the Optus subscription, they are stuck with that. They could spend a lot of money to be CDN ready, and from past comments, thats not cheap, so they would then be paying for two delivery options, with no subscriber gain.

Many see NF prices as standard, but only recently, after years, have they stopped having losses, so its too cheap. When the price went up $2, the world ended, its crazy.

Please, hurry up Sky and just die, these death throws are painful to watch.

Long after Sky, rugby will still exist, as well new platforms for sports fans to watch it on.

Senecio:

I'm with Sky through one of the deals on this site. Only signed up recently so still have 10 months to run on this subscription. I doubt I'll renew as with the rate of pace of streaming alternatives I don't think they'll have a unique offering in a year's time. The only content that I'll be missing is the golf coverage. Sky currently provide an excellent service for golf fans with live coverage across the 3 main tours (PGA, European Tour & LPGA) often simultaneously across their Pop-up channels. I know this isn't important to everyone but it is to me and I'll need to find an alternative before I drop the service.

I'm in very much the same boat. The two most viewed sports for me are MotoGP and golf. I have a pretty good alternative for less than $200 a year with the MotoGP fan pass but for golf there is nothing. If you find anything, let me know.

The other annoyance is the mysky decoder. It is such a dog, just unbelievable. It works pretty well but every so often they stuff up a series link so it stops recording and deleting stuff is so painful, it takes 30s for something that should take less than 5s. I'm not holding my breath for any improvement there.

I have about 7 months to go since I called them up and wanted to cancel. They gave me a staged discount of 3 months, 4 months and 12 months for various products. Worked out about $350 savings over the year if I signed up for 12 months. I'll be ringing up to cancel though at the end of that period, certainly not going back to paying full price.

The thing that irks me about the MySkyHDi decoder is the lack of HDMI-CEC. The volume levels between the sound-bar, decoder and TV get out of whack whenever anyone touches the sky remote volume.

RugbyPass.com has relatively low priced rugby live streaming but according to their web page only available in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, East Timor, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Their banner page says "Any time anywhere". Not quite anywhere, it seems.

I am not bothered with unblocking the geoblock on something like Netflix as a paying subscriber but am not comfortable with doing so on this one, mainly as I'm not sure how it would affect the revenue of New Zealand rugby.

PGA Tour have live streaming but it's kinda limited (Thu/Fri rounds) and probably geoblocked as well. Anyone tried it?

The same complaints flooded in due to the doubling of lastpass subscriptions to $24 per annum!

As you note, NF priced themselves to gain market share not turn a profit like so called incumbent media companies have had to. NF certainly have the ability to scale much more than Sky ever will, and not having to support legacy infrastructure has given them a significant advantage. The religious fervour that surrounds their catalogue also helps immensely.

I do wonder what people would say if NF becomes the dominant global player and hikes fees accordingly.

They have a new box in the UK called SkyQ. Introduced last year, it is UHD capable as well as a whole bunch of other features including a Bluetooth remote and streaming to devices on your network. It has had a few teething problems but is about a decade ahead of what sky provides here.
Mind you, if profits are already down, they may be loathe to introduce new equipment.

With options already available for UHD, and the rumoured AppleTV5 to be the same, they really need to remain relevant. Sports in UHD=awesome.

Good points. While my rough and ready calc of moving 100% from Satellite to streaming is only a saving to Sky of $8 per subscriber, per month, there has to be many other gains. NF could run from a small office, plus a floor for helpdesk staff. Sky needs to do that.

Dish is $400, there are probably one million on roofs in NZ. Get rid of that and all the staff that goes with it. But Sky offers far more than the $15 SVOD offering.

Minor issue is 70 million vs 5

The last few posts are way off topic. This is a sky deals thread. If you want to have a chat/winge about Sky in general then start another thread.

Please keep on topic.

Given Fellet's comments about clamping down on the new customer deals, we've signed up to the $39 + $9.99 Soho 12 month deal.  A three month stand down was mentioned, but they were okay with a two month stand-down.

Something just feels wrong about calling a telemarketer's call centre.  It's like going to a Jehovah's witnesses church to talk to the door to door evangelists.

Cant agree. There are people that walk the streets, oddly called street walkers, for power companies and telco's. The centre that manages these Sky deals is the same thing, apart from walking the streets. I called them, very helpful and knowledgable. Due to my house, I got a Sky contractor to assess where and how he will fit the dish. I told the centre, they made sure he was my installer. Pretty good service.

No one is denigrating the call centre. You've missed the point entirely.

Then why not clarify your point instead of a half pie reply?

" It's like going to a Jehovah's witnesses church to talk to the door to door evangelists. " Seems denigrating to me, hence my post
