tdgeek: Spronkey The problem is that SKY is the only way to legally get certain content, e.g. Formula 1 or some rugby.

You need to ask other TV providers to provide that content. Sly is not a monopoly, not all providers have identical content.

Sorry to burst your bubble but sky is a monopoly.  Bulk of the stuff on Sky is sown up  so no one else can access it..

My bubble is not burst

Sky is not a monopoly. You can choose Sky, or free to air, there are many free channels that provide news, dramas, kids stuff, movies, and sport. You can get movies on FTA, Sky, Sky PPV, Caspa PPV. You can get HD on FTA, you can get a MySkyHDi competitor on FTA, this is a TIVO box.

To acquire programs, all providers pay for them. Yes, Suy has a greater range and number of channels, as they pay for the content, and thus the Sky subscribers pay a fee. You can choose the fee from Basic plus whatever you wish to add on.

So you have choices, both on cost and hardware.

Apart from when it comes to sports.  To be able to watch the majority of premium sports events LIVE you need to be a Sky Subscriber and you have no options as Sky have exclusive deals with the sports providers, apart from going down to your nearest pub.  And they then offer it up via Prime with x hours delay.

I do agree that with Movies and other existing content (Kids TV, Movies, Food tv et al) there are choices, but for live TV sports events, 99% of that is with sky.

Bar Tender - but for live TV sports events, 99% of that is with sky.

Well, the other providers need to buy the rights then, Sky is not be default exclusive provider. Sky bid for them and other providers had that option too. There have been other major sports that were only on TV One in the past. Naturally, FTA TV can only cover these purchases by advertising. To remove/reduce advertising and to acquire more programs the costs are high, so those who choose to watch these have to pay a fee.

If FTA was to provide a similar content to Sky, the advertising in the programs would be extensive, and possibly they would have to find a way to charge a PPV.

You cannot get something for nothing, that s the reality.

So again, as a "end consumer" what choices do I have in regards to live sports events?  There is only one Sky as they have the subscriber base, and thus the on-going revenue to bid and win for these sports events.

In this way Sky is the monopoly, much like Telecom and the copper wire in the ground.  Due to their size and critical mass and the small size of NZ's population there isn't any financial viability of alternatives.

In many ways it's a cyclic issue as Sky has the funding to buy the majority of sports events due to its subscriber base, which also expect that Sky carry those events.  Carrying content via Satellite isn't cheap, nor is buying international sports events (or for that matter any recent international content in HD).

I think it would be a tough argument to say that Sky isn't a monopoly in this way IMHO.

The thing is - for example they pay the rugby union for the broadcast rights. So unless sombody else wants to do that, that cost needs to be recovered somehow. If Dan Carter doesnt get paid in NZ he will be off......

Personally, I think rugby has been killed by the unending broadcasting of games and the need to keep playing to keep the money flowing in. There is no sense of occasion any more. IMHO its like a race horse that has to run in every race and has been flogged to bits.....

But thats my choice - I have dropped Sky Sports cos I am bored with so much rugby, oh - and the golf. Dont get me started on the golf!!

I dont care about a 'monopoly' for something that at the end of the day is optional, and not going to make people go hungry if they don't have it.

common sense is not very common

I dont agree, it is thr majority infratrstructure provider, not the only one by far.

I disagree, IMHO, there are choices. When rugger was on TV1 that was the way it was then. F1 used to be on One also. The issue is not of monopoly, it is of choice and at the moment, the content some of you want is only on Sky. What about the content that is not on Sky? You can pay by $ or you can pay be heavy advertising, 4 mins every 10 mins.

Zippity: Remember the good old days when free-to-air TV (the channels all those whinging about Sky love so much) brought us "live" Formula One motor racing?

Remember how they always went over to the "ads" when the racing was just about to get exciting or when one of the leading protagonists veered off the racetrack into the tyre wall?

Well guess what?

You get none of that krap from Sky LaughingLaughing

amen.  Also remember the good old days where a live race at 7pm would be bumped to mightnight, cos they didn't want to ruin there ratings and put the race in prime time.

In a lot of cases in regard to sport, the alternative would be no coverage.  TVNZ sports budget is scraping the barrel right now.  They didn't want to stump up for FA Cup final coverage, they sold their rights for the Comm Games to Sky.  They emptied the rest of the kitty to buy the FTA rights to the soccer [aka football] World Cup.

hah,  other than the premium channels (movies and sports)  Sky has just as much advertising as FTA channels.

try watching the Box, discovery, MTV etc etc - even though you paid Sky $50 for all these chanels (plus a few dozen you don't even want) you still get bombarded with adverts.

Not the point.  You can say the same about any PVR.

If you don't want Sky, ditch it.
I'm with Zippity, all the bleaters and moaners complain about this and that with Sky - if it really gets on your goat, get rid of it and then we won't have to hear you complaining.
It's not compulsory, go and watch your Coro St on FTA.

this is not the sky appreciation thread, all complaints here are on topic and for most Sky subscribers the only way to get feedback to Sky is to post on forums like this.

If you dont like the bleating and complaining it's simple DON't look at this thread.

on with the bleating please...
