There are some serious ux issues with the app and the content delivered from Sky Sports Now in my opinion.  The fact that its effectively just delivering the same satellite stream to the app but at a lower quality is one, the TV guide is poor and stuttery on both an Nvidia Shield and my 2023 TCL c845 and doesn't smoothly scroll across times now (they almost need to look the cursor to the TV guide window until the back button is pressed to avoid the +- 2 hour approach), replays are not posted quickly especially the EPL, took well over 12 hours to get a man utd reply up after it had played.  Finally the streams in the tv guide sometimes don't reflect where they would be normally.  Watched the F1 on reply and going back in time, the qualifying started 7 minutes in to Q1 rather than at the beginning of the Quali show and the actual race started on the formation lap rather than at the F1 intro like it should be.

Sky have a long way to go to match the quality of Spark Sports streams and app but I don't think Sky know anything but linear streaming approaches given the improvements made don't make any changes to the underlying approach.

I think we may have been down this track, but I find SSN is a vast improvement on what it used to be.

I use an Apple TV4K and find the image is bloody good, considerably better than it used to be. I think the UI is a step in the right direction, but still had some limitations. I never look for a reply, and just use the TV Guide.

There are two main things, that piss me off...

  1. They only allow one stream at any one time. With teens in the house, they often want to watch something when I do or each other etc. Most comparable apps/companies allow 2 streams and have an increased price point for more. I contacted Sky about this and they said they have no plans to change. They are obviously terrified it will lead to password sharing and a loss of subs. But I'm sure their solution isn't really for me to purchase 2 x $45 subs a month to overcome this.
  2. The 30sec FF and Rewind. Again Sky seem to be the outlier here, sticking with a 30 secs time frame, where every other app I've ever seen is 10secs. It's even more of an issue with sports coverage. Rewind a football game 30secs and it's sometime before you see the foul, goal etc that you wanted a replay of, and in cricket it's worse with the play going a long way back.

At least they now seem to be paying more than passing interest to their streaming product, but I heartily agree re Sparks Sport, they could have just purchased that interface and used that.

New variation on the same issue has appeared.

So seems that they have mostly resolved the buffering as i am now able to watch content on the tv app, but now the UI overlay appears at random times every few minutes. This normally happens when there is a buffering issue, however it would appear as if the issue lasts a fraction of a second, just enough time for the app to think the stream has paused/broken.

I have the same issue today - very annoying.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Senecio:

navigating the new guide is an utter pain! To go back in time you have to navigate to that left arrow and then click it to move to the past. Again and again.........

You beat me to it!
I don’t know about other devices, but on an Apple TV, it’s atrocious. As you say, you can slide to two programmes and have to hit the left button.
I navigate the gate on the app on my phone, which is pretty seamless and saves a little bit of time.
Sometimes the highlighted box just disappears,
The bar/FF Button doesn’t stay on, and to call this an upgrade is a bit of a stretch.
On a positive note, the guide now stays on its last position instead of defaulting to the current program on SS1

I believe you have the new appleTV remote don’t you. Do the native controls work on that to skip forward and back ( 30 seconds) I presume not. On the old remote I have to select the icon and press ok.

No they don't work, only limited to the screen controls, which have had a refresh (in terms of look), but nothing has changed in terms of what they do.

With full sky satellite it used to only cost $20 more to get a second decoder - So why when their expenses are soooooo much lower for streaming do they not offer an upgrade for 2 screens - This pisses me off no end too. My girls want to watch the rugby but they don't want to watch it with their uncool parents - They want to watch with their mates in the other lounge or at their house. Sky are just anti consumer - They are still in the mindset of having the monopoly means they don't have to care.

I've said this before here I think but I range them to see if there were any promotions going - Got a "NO". So I said if I subscribe through Apple that means apple clip the ticket and take up to 30% so if I subscribe direct will they offer a discount??? "NO".

So screw them - I subscribed via the Apple App store in App purchase to spite the pricks.

You don't even need to pay the $20 nowdays, If you have satellite you can have your STB PLUS two different screens watching SkyGo anywhere in NZ for free.

But if you use their Streaming service where their expenses for installation are zero, equipment = zero and leasing bandwidth on Satellite = zero they screw you.

I can't help but feel Streaming users are being used to subsidise the satellite lease costs they have to pay.

I'm not surprised at that especially considering satellite users can still get discounts for 12 month contracts. Last week I signed up for another 12 months I'm paying $45.13 (inc) a month for Sky Starter and Sky Sport with Two streams of SkyGo on top. Its pretty much the same price as a month on Sky sports now..

Why would they undercut a subscription by offering SSN cheaper?  They know what side their bread is buttered on.

Because surely leasing space on a Satellite to cover people with no technical acumen and Farmers is the middle of no-where doesn't seem like a great future prospect. The world is moving to Streaming for their entertainment.

The lease on satellite bandwidth cost them more than $200 million for Satellite space from 21 -> 31.

Surely they should be attempting to start getting loyal customers onto their platform for the future instead of flogging a dying horse but I guess they have to keep bleeding us all to pay for the lease commitment.
