Unfortunately I think Sky model their marketing on subsidising their ‘core’ content with all the other cr$p already, so the likelihood hood of climbing Sat costs being passed on to a shrinking satellite user base is small, especially if they have a growing VoD user base to ‘offload’ this cost onto... the key factor will be their initial offer price for VoD uptake to be cost effective AND attractive without instantly losing the 600,000 who are on the Satellite offering but would happily take (or even prefer) the VoD offering price and ‘features’...

Tough times ahead for Sky to survive this transition, and very likely have to take a serious loss-leading position on the VoD opening with a longer term plan for the total transition of their customer base.

Given the discussion points on pages 136 and 137 of the presentation does this gel with your thoughts on the satellite offering in the near future?

Based off the screenshots, the puck looks like the Technicolor Sapphire, but saying that they also use screenshots of the Nexus Player, so I suspect it will change quite a bit. The only mentions of Kaon STBs was when they were talking about the existing STB, at least from the way I interpreted it.

This is normal. Same situation if your large business relocates factories, or builds a new factory. They are paying for the old and the new over a period. Sky will be paying the current Optus fees till I guess what seems to be 2019 or 2021. As well as the VoD setup and transmission fees. Thats normal. You can't cut one off on 1 Jan and start the other 2 Jan. It will likely be an Extraordinary item writeoff, so it will be expensed, but seperated as a one off, so as not to distort normal trading results.

Noticed the first part of the release, the new Sky Go app has been released. I haven't tried much out, but it seems rather lacklustre, as it seems to use the existing app underneath making a rather jarring experience. Hopefully the other products will fare better

The big question is whether they try to do it on the cheap and not have the necessary bandwidth and equipment to cope with the demand.

1. The app is in the presentation, ATV4 is supported

2. I think you can assume the transmission will be adequately covered. They have Cisco to implement that, also as per the presentation

I know that Foxtel work on a different economies of scale (6 times the population, higher %age regional and rural, craptasic broadband), but when they introduced Foxtel Now the satellite price did not change. I cannot see satellite delivery ending any time soon. While there are some (myself included) that don't watch much linear tv, there are plenty of others that do, and like the convenience of everything (including FTA + My Sky) in a single STB.

The reason I say that because of what a disaster SkyGo is today and what Neon was like when they first launched it not to mention the fact that we're in 2018 and they still insist on using Flash for SkyGo.

I just hope that they do something stupid to undermine what is an otherwise good vision given Sky's propensity to do something stupid.

Rural is Sky's problem. They have a reasonable customer base who can't get UHF and went satellite years ago, and a lot who don't get or won't want IPTV based services. I'd be very surprised if atleast a subset of their services end up on Optus 10 using H.264 for better capacity use.

I cant recall anything stupid Sky has done. They have been around forever, had 1 STB in every second home and were are are successful. Maybe you could argue that many years ago before SVOD became popular here that they didnt foresee something that didnt exist and get in then before they signed a lengthy Optus contract.

IMO SkyGo, Neon and Sky On Demand were setup to get their foot in the door, analogous to DIY, 90% is preparation. The last bit is easy. But they could not afford to run two full platforms over years. Given that its only recently that SVOD has started to dig in to subscriber numbers, and even then its small percentages, this all seems fair.

SkyGo was error prone, its good now, Ive used it a bit lately, the res seems to be improved, no errors, its good. Neon was SD and is now HD I believe. Sky OnDemand works well. So its all there. and the time is now.

Sky doesnt broadcast anything I believe. Or very little. Thats done by Optus and whatever this party they use for OD. Now, Cisco will do the heavy lifting OD wise. L

The presentation was every well done, two years in the making. From what I can garner it will be more featured than the standard SVOD grid format.

I can't see an issue

It's not. Sky is a PayTV provider. Happily they were catered for. Had they not been here then Freeview would have had to cater for them by adding more repeaters. They will be sorted till 2026, and likely that someone will provide a satellite Freeview for them. Maybe Sky, maybe Freeview.
