I've paid for SOHO the last few years solely to get Game of Thrones. But the nature of my job has meant that I normally 'obtain' it so I can watch it on a particular tv or tablet that's nowhere near the Sky decoder. I think after this season I'm done with Sky. I watch MotoGP and F1, but because I travel Monday to Friday I invariably find out the result before I get back.

Like I said earlier, when Sky was UHF and they only had 5 channels, the quality (of Movies/HBO, anyway) was invariably better than it is today - I guess because they had to be much more selective as they only had one move channel.
Now they have - is it 5? and they're full of repeats and ads between movies.

Picture quality is ok. However the interface is slow and looks like it was smashed together by someone who failed design school 20 years ago.

The content selection is very limited.

Tonight I've gone into the "Fantasy & Science Fiction" section of movies, which contains many children's movies so somebody's stuffed up bigly on the tagging. 3 out of 3 movies I selected failed to load:
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens
- John Carter
- Central Intelligence (a comedy, so another mis-tagging)

To me, Neon's a waste of time. I certainly wouldn't pay for a subscription.

Also no dobly digital on Neon. I trailed it and was happy with picture, but the surround sound makes some programs/movies.

Netflix does dd5.1 streaming, don't know why it's so hard for Neon to do. Also it needs more applics on more devices, not even out on Apple TV.

It exists in the UK with their SkyQ box. Mind you if Sky are cheeky enough to charge $10 per decoder for HD, goodness only knows what they would demand for UHD!

Time frame for UHD capable decoders is second half next year. No point rolling out now as no bandwidth (until the 5 transponders are switched to DVB-S2 H.264/H.265?).

EDIT: And certain luddites won't give up their legacy DVB-S mpeg2 only decoders.

Just clearing up some info, Sky has 7 t.p. not 5, ones marked with * are DVB -S2 already, the upgrade would allow them to drop more than 20 SD Channel feeds along with a big improvement to the quality of the remaining SD feeds. If I was sky I would hand one t.p back to Optus or sublease it to Freeview

I'm quite aware that two transponders are already S2 (5+2=7).

In the beginning Sky bid against TVNZ for rights to our national sports..it didint win them all but it did eventually as its customer base ballooned. So it could be said Sky set the price for sports in a country of 4 million people and is probably paying way too much. No doubt to cover so much sport the costs are also high.

I was a Sky subscriber from day one until 2 years ago and I quit cause it was just getting too expensive, eg annual increases regardless... IMO I think the state should get involved again with key NZ sports broadcasts. When we can spend millions on flags etc we can make key sports free to air again (with advertising) for the masses to enjoy. Programming is different and there are already good models in existence to watch these and there will be more. Sky has shown little interest in other delivery models and seems to encourage them to fail.

The taxpayer is funding a new Chch stadium to the extent of around $200M, so making key national sports free to view for most seems logical.

Sky NZ is too small to survive global delivery and at the bare minimum should be looking to merge with its Aussie counterpart. Australia still has free to air sports (just). Not sure I have all the answers, but I do have all the questions....

No idea.

I just feel that while the costs to ditch Optus are only about $8 per month per subscriber, they can drop brick and mortar and dish ownership as well, and as I think you said, Basic is cheap, Sport is what it costs

But there is another issue. Sticking my neck out here, but a rash assumption tells me that all here are streaming ready. IT literate, good internet connections, although thats not always the case. Sky cant really pay for Optus and also setup CDN's for streaming, thats two lots of transmission costs. Are all of the almost 800,000 current users on VDSL or Fibre? MySky, already supporting streaming is there and a great non IT literate STB for the masses. But how many are there on slow ADSL, good ADSL with it being used while Sky streaming is being used?

I meant that the motel/hotel would need a pretty solid and fast internet connection to support many rooms playing Sky over the internet every night. Those with slower VDSL or with ADSL would find it very tough to satisfy the bandwidth I would have thought.
