I have a friend who says that the Bluetooth feature on his iPhone 5 is turned off ... yet when he gets into his car the phone connects with the stereo/hands-free system and that he can make and receive calls.

Ummm .... what's happening?  Any ideas?

It isn't turned off?

Does he see the BT symbol next to the battery charge indicator?

As far as I know there is no way the bluetooth gear in a car can switch on something that is switched off.

So you would have to conclude the bluetooth doesnt shut off on his iphone even though it may say that it is.
There a few posts on google about bluetooth not disabling properly (there are always posts about anything on google though).

I guess its a good idea to make sure your friend has all the latest IOS updates etc.

Bluetooth is pretty low power usage though - bit annoying though if you think its switched off and its still on.

IF he doesn't want the bluetooth connection to work, then he should unsync the devices,

perhaps he means Bluetooth Discovery (i.e. the scanning for devices thing) is off.

Or he is just an idiot.

You could say that, but I couldn't possibly comment innocent

I've asked him to check that the off/on slider works, and if the BT icon is showing or not.

Thanks for comments guys.

The phone owner says that there is no BT icon unless he turns BT on using the slider ... and that it goes away when the slider is put to off.  Also says that IOS is fully up to date.

I'd like to watch what actually happens when he gets in the car, but since he's in Los Angeles I'd not get back in time for dinner tonight sealed

Does the iPhone have some form of infra-red or wifi capability to connect with a car's phone system?

No, only cable or Bluetooth.

I wonder if he isn't connecting a charging cable to it, which talks to the stereo?

It suddenly struck me that he may be doing that, or have some wired cradle .... I've now asked.
