I have fiddled around with a Sony PS3 and attached PS3 Play TV.

It does much of the pause live tv and record programmes. No Season Pass as such but it can do time based programme recording.

The main issue is the heat and power consumption of a PS3 on all the time.

It is a fantastic picture, and can do 1080p.

A remote is available for the PS3 which included channel control.

WAF factor will be low, but for the Mancave it does work with a beautiful image and allow many of the TIVO functions

But, it is still the best freeview product on the market.

It just shows how bad NZ is at real innovation.

Not much going on with the oztivo forum which is where I would have expected folks to pick up on it and go. But their mailing list has been a lot more silent than this thread.

I would wait until someone starts getting serious about opening the box up and having a proper crack at rebuilding the EPG scraper.

Part of me thinks the easiest way would be to get an external DTT USB stick, plug it into the Tivo if you can build a driver for that CPU and then figure out how to poke the EPG into the box.

The other option would be MITM the traffic flow to the to the servers and build your own to simulate all the different traffic flows.

Anyone want to put their hand up to spend the time doing that?

If I recall the original shipment was 200,000 or 250,000 units.

I am sure there will still be around 100,000 in service today.

The best alternative I can see is the Fetch TV however the issue will be the licensing of the online content, Sky will fight tooth and nail to keep their monopoly on this content.

If sky was smart ( an oxymoron i know ) they would try and get Fetch TV here under its own banner.

Has anyone given any thought to the TiVo home network package ?

There are many people including myself with more than one TiVo that are networked to a PC via the TiVo home networking package.

After 31 Oct I assume the existing home networks will continue to function as long as the TiVo's are not reset.

If the network does continue then PC based DVR software + a suitable DVB-T tuner unit can continue to record the TV programs & season passes in a compatible format for TiVo.

TiVo Desktop software or the TiVo's themselves can then transfer these recordings to whichever unit to store or view almost instantly.

Your thoughts please ?

I've seen some videos of a HD home run Pvr. Anyone had a play to see how it would go as a TiVo replacement

If this was ever developed it must be VERY SIMPLE for anyone to use & implement. Im a fairly competent web designer (not professional), but Ive never 'hacked' into any product before to change it...

If its not simple, then people will just go & buy an off-the-shelf product....

Certainly there would be more than 1000 active as was estimated by a poster above. I would think it would be closer to 50 k. I know quite a few people who have got them. Also the poster above said that it was now outdated and to move on. However that is incorrect because there actually isn't a device I have found in the NZ market that matches it and has the known reliability of the tivo brand. The closest device seems to be the panasonic which is a good brand but it is very spendy. Really tivo USA should be coming up with a solution if they haven't sourced a replacement provider. Or they should push out a patch that pulls the epg from OTA. That is ultimately the only problem, getting the EPG updated so it can be used to record. People could try contacting tivos head office via multiple channels for a solution as I presume it is in their control with who they license to provide the server.

The thing is that of it doesn't work I wonder if people can get a refund as it wasn't a cheap add on. It was never advertised as a time restricted licence. I recall I purchased the hnp about 2-3 years ago

Not trying to be negative but working in software this is a fact of life.

People under estimate the costs of running it because there are also staff to pay. However over the last few years there have been quite a few problems with tivos epg not being updated and the online genie and it seems it wasn't being run very well.
