Funny that. Having had the Tivo for about 7 years now it's been years since I checked the PVR market. So it was a bit of a shock to discover that from what used to be dozens of options to choose from to buy or DIY, there's only DishTV or Panasonic to choose from. Even the DIY options seemed to have gone a step backwards. I guess that's what happens to a sunset technology.
Anyway, I wonder if Mauricio could work out a deal with an MMR - Geekzone discounts for a Panny replacement for a Tivo or something.

Certainly there would be more than 1000 active as was estimated by a poster above. I would think it would be closer to 50 k. I know quite a few people who have got them. Also the poster above said that it was now outdated and to move on. However that is incorrect because there actually isn't a device I have found in the NZ market that matches it and has the known reliability of the tivo brand. The closest device seems to be the panasonic which is a good brand but it is very spendy. Really tivo USA should be coming up with a solution if they haven't sourced a replacement provider. Or they should push out a patch that pulls the epg from OTA. That is ultimately the only problem, getting the EPG updated so it can be used to record. People could try contacting tivos head office via multiple channels for a solution as I presume it is in their control with who they license to provide the server.

Yes you're correct. I miss-typed the figure... I meant to add another 0 however I do need to replace my Chromebook too as it's keyboard is pretty bad now :) I used to own 3 TiVo units so know how you feel and have one still in operation.

I know many many people who have had failed hard drives, or taken them out of operation for other reasons. I've also repaired a couple of units with dodgy caps so I would guess of the original shipment quite a few would have failed over the years.

It would be interesting to get the actual figure of active units.

here I am thinking it was a good run when they were <$200 in early 2012 nationwide vs other comparable ones were double the price and others are outraged they are finally ending EPG support when it should have happened in late 2014 when they closed NZ operations.

I have fiddled around with a Sony PS3 and attached PS3 Play TV.

It does much of the pause live tv and record programmes. No Season Pass as such but it can do time based programme recording.

The main issue is the heat and power consumption of a PS3 on all the time.

It is a fantastic picture, and can do 1080p.

A remote is available for the PS3 which included channel control.

WAF factor will be low, but for the Mancave it does work with a beautiful image and allow many of the TIVO functions

This gives all Freeview channels.?

Yes it's a Freeview decoder.

I put it on again today. The programming appears to be limited, but this may be a set up issue. Prime TV for example doesn't appear to show programmes but is viewable.

I did a rescan of all Freeview channels today and it picked some new ones.

I would consider it a stepping stone to a longer term solution.

But it is a very fine looking solution. And you have the choice of a standard TV remote or using the PS3 hand held controller.

And it is dual tuner with record while watching the other.

There are many people including myself with more than one TiVo that are networked to a PC via the TiVo home networking package.

After 31 Oct I assume the existing home networks will continue to function as long as the TiVo's are not reset.

If the network does continue then PC based DVR software + a suitable DVB-T tuner unit can continue to record the TV programs & season passes in a compatible format for TiVo.

TiVo Desktop software or the TiVo's themselves can then transfer these recordings to whichever unit to store or view almost instantly.

Your thoughts please ?

The thing is that of it doesn't work I wonder if people can get a refund as it wasn't a cheap add on. It was never advertised as a time restricted licence. I recall I purchased the hnp about 2-3 years ago

I've not seen any other Freeview boxes that let you rewind live TV at any time. My Mrs loves that functionality. (Did I really see that? or "Damn kids being too noisy, let me rewind and listen again. or similar)

Being able to schedule recordings while away using the Genie was very handy on occasions.

After upgrading my 320Gb HDD to 2Tb, I saved a search for all movies coming up, and once a fortnight I would scan through that list and schedule the recording of any I might be interested in. Half of them went unwatched, but it was really nice to save some classics I wanted to watch again that I might otherwise not have noticed were coming up.

I have 2 Tivos and have had zero reliability issues. I did replace a noisy fan in one - cheap to order online and easy installed.

Play tv required you to buy an app that supplies the nz epg data.

Sound familiar? One day that will be pulled too I would expect. I gave up on it as it was slow to load and very stuttery.

Another example of a product that had to be butchered to work in NZ because Freeview didn't offer up the eit data epg.

Do Samsung still offer an NZ Freeview pvr?

I didn't buy an APP and the PS3 still shows the Freeview programmes today. Limited to two hours ahead, but this may be a set up issue.

The PS3 is the finest looking Freeview image I have seen (alongside the Draco/Sanyo units).

I bought my Play TV as a $10 experiment.

The PS3 pause live TV function may yet prove to be the replacement for TIVO.

Fetch TV isn't just a freeview box.. He's talking about the subscription channels that are available.

i can rewind Live TV, IF you are not recording it. Not ideal though.

I have had no hardware issues, I dont watch Tivo, its in the bedroom as the wife likes too watch Chinese stuff. Every now and then, she tells me its not recording, so I restart it. Not every week, or month, but often enough to be not acceptable. If I was using it, I WOULD be more the pi$$ed off. My Panny 720 has NO issues, MySky has NO issues, so for a basic stay alive, record this, I expect that to work 99.99% of the the time. Like my toaster.
