Does Hybrid even need permission? I remember seeing a Q&A with one of the Freeview guys who said that the Freeview EPG is open to any licensed Freeview receiver, and he mentioned TiVo as an example.

If they were using the MHEG EPG data, no they would not need permission,

But TIVO are sourcing the EPG data from the broadcasters independently from the transmission and delivering it via IP to the box via a BB connection, thus they need an agreement

I thought Tivo was also not going to be FreeView certified

benmurphy66: I got the same email today after all the phone calls and email rather disappointed. Maybe they did not like us commenting on geekzone about taking paart in the pilot, I did however stop commenting once I signed the NDA.

I got a phone call from TiVo yesterday. At the end it came down to budget and number of units available at the start of the trials...

Did you explain that you ran this website and did they offer to put you back in? :)

No, I didn't need to explain, they already know it. And they read these forums. I didn't ask to be put back into the trial, but I was told that as member of media I will get a review unit later, after the trial.

To be clear to others reading here, I told them I wasn't getting a unit to review - which would be against the terms of beta anyway, but to be part of the trial. Seeing they have distribution problems because of numbers, and seeing I might have an opportunity to try one later anyway it's fair not to ask to be in the trial now.

Cool. Thanks for the passing on what you found out. Pity Tivo couldn't explain that when they cut me from the beta at the last minute.

We're in OZ at the mo.. Went into DSE and looked at a Tivo here.. looks ok.  Interesting chatting with the salesperson, he has one himself and likes it, however hates the 'American design' of the menus.

what did he mean by that I wonder?  Does the menu have stars and stripes everywhere?  Or maybe bible passages?

nah. The gut at DSE in Ozz most likely didn't like the fact that the TiVo was designed in the US and not by Holden on Ozz.... I work for a company that is parented in Ozz  and they have this same attitude even though the product is design in Japan and the US.  Features are crippled if they don't think they need it in Ozz so we don't get it as well..

In order:

I got about 5 or 6 emails confirming I was part of the beta.
I got a TSN assigned to me.
I got a confirmation a box was about to shipped to me.
I got a login to the beta portal, and have read all the beta test forums cover to cover.
I recieved an email saying I was no longer part of the trial, and my access to forums etc was disabled.
I recieved 3 more emails two days later confirming that I was in fact part of the beta.
I was asked to log into the beta portal to complete some tasks.
I could still access the forums (Project Gimli)
I emailed the beta team asking what was happening - no response.
Emailed the person who originally told me I was on the beta trial and was told again I was off the beta.

It has also been quite time consuming, just dealing with the info required to participate in the beta.

Reading Mauricios earlier post, so TiVo is admitting to having budget problems, and an inability to carry out the amount of pre-release testing they originally deemed necessary, before they launch their product in New Zealand? Odd...

I like the screenshots I have seen of the TiVo in use. Looks really user friendly.

My understanding is that the TiVo in Oz and NZ is totally different from the US one – so the menu system etc is pretty much bespoke to Oz.
