With a tivo (and some other products) you buy two things.

First is a box. This obviously holds the tuner and software to enable the delivery of the features your have purchased. A warranty claim on hardware within two years may be what the guarantee purchased states or it may be the reasonable life expectancy of such a thing. I think someone here has suggested Consumer reckons 5 years is about as good as it get for your standard electronic boxes. But bear in mind tivo was marketed as a Rolls Royce type product so perhaps the life expectancy of the box should be longer. As a clue to how long these things last, when the Series One were turned off there were 3,500 units that were more than 12 years old. So perhaps it could be argued that a Tivo box is a bit more than your average piece of kit. As an aside I'm not sure I would rely on Consumer - they didnt even know how big the hard drive was when the tested Tivo before giving it a "Not Recommended"assessment of DVR's.

The other thing you buy is a subscription. This might be for one year - in which case you should expect to receive your Tivo features for one year. It might be for a "Product Lifetime" which you should expect to receive the tivo features for the lifetime of the box - since this is how Tivo define a lifetime. Indeed Product Life time subscribers did receive their features for the lifetime - Series one was something like 14 years.

If you have a warranty that covers defects with no stipulated period (as I have) then arguably if there is a defect on one of the things that has been purchased the warranty would kick in. Incidentally I could have bought an Extended Warranty. I didn't so I dont know what this covered - maybe if covered the box for 5 years. Someone here may know.

And in the interests of accuracy there was a third thing I bought - and that was a wireless adapter. No moving parts so I'd suggest 5 years might be a reasonable life time for such a thing.

You seem to be confusing warranty and CGA. Warranties are usually hard time-limited in writing. The CGA is the one that mentions a longer time for repairs and even so doesn't give a specific time.

This probably belongs on another thread. but I think its a bit disappointing that there is such a throwaway/ disposable attitude to things. I'f Id bought a cheap bit of crap with a shoddy reputation and poor market image I'd be inclined to agree with you. But in terms of consumer friendly media devices I'm not sure there is anything out there that beats a Tivo. Shame we will never see it again in NZ. I think the partners involved have done more than enough to wreck brand reputation in NZ and Oz. Warranty and Service issues aside I expected a lot longer than 5 years out of my Tivo - but maybe I just stand alone on that view.

I understand the difference. As mentioned before "warranty covers manufacturing faults and defects. Warranty excludes moisture and impact damage" no reference to time limit. Under the CGA repair isn't the only option - there is also replace or refund. Three "'R's" I guess.

says the warranty is 12 months on their website, and thats from the page from 2010 via archive.org (Notice: This document was last updated on 6 November 2009.)

still pretty much says the same thing today.

At the risk of being accused of spamming this thread you will find the answer in my post at the beginning of the day. Though I am already anticipating my beginning action isnt going to meet the standard set by your in-law. And as my Great Aunt Myrtle would often say "only fools rush in"

So why would you even want to try claiming under warranty. Plus as per the post above, the warranty is only 12 months, which seems to be standard on some electrical stuff, and the CGA should provide more protection than that.. Retailers though sometimes give you the option to buy a 5 year extended warranty, which is possibly what some people purchased with their tivos? But apparently Consumer don't recommend extended warranties normally https://www.consumer.org.nz/articles/extended-warranties . But I do wonder if in this case anyone did buy an extended warranty? Although I suspect that they may just be a few months out of that warranty by the time they turn it off.

Bold 1 "rolls Royce" may be a bit of hyperbole on my part. Would you settle for "world class entertainment device". Or maybe when I say "world class" I ought to say "TiVo represents a revolution in the way Kiwis watch television" or howabaout "an outstanding result for the consumer.". Some of its here: http://tvnz.co.nz/content/2997521 and with all the features described I think I can be forgiven for calling it Rolls Royce when compared with the other Toyota products on the market at the time. And for the record thats not my commentary - thats Telecoms and Hybrids to add weight to their launch. Seems like they were all talk and no trousers eh?

Its all well and good posters showing these various websites. Its interesting but does not relate to my Tivo. I have quoted the warantee that came with my paper work - there is no mention of a 12 month warantee.

That is a bit like insurance where some people win, and some people lose. To be fair though, Tivo US's own licensing terms do currently mention that the lifetime license is for the life of the box, and not the person who purchased it, as shown here https://www.tivo.com/buytivo/tivopriceplans/items/plandtls_S00031_ajaxpopup.html . It appears Tivo US are the ones who leased Hybrid the rights to sell and support this tivo series 3 box in Australia, and then later in NZ.

Was there actually a warranty in the box that came with it? I thought it would only have a link to a website. But whatever teh case, I would highly doubt any warranty would provide more protection than the CGA. Or do you have a copy of your warranty you can upload that doesn't specify the duration?
