Our UK brethren appear to have risen to the challenge

AltEPG

On June 1st 2011, TiVo Inc. (USA) ceased the original TiVo service in the UK.

This means the original Tivo series one units will no longer receive any electronic programme guide (EPG) data and thus render many of their functions like Season Passes, Wishlists etc. in-operable.

The Alternative EPG Project (AltEPG) was born to independently source and provide replacement guide data as a substitute service, thus enabling users with perfectly good TiVo hardware to continue using their DVR’s.

This replacement guide data service is sourced from internet based content, maintained and improved via crowd sourcing. This means the quality of the guide data is in our (the users) hands.

That's old news, and useless to anyone here.

NZ TiVo is a series 3.

Any new TV I buy in future will NOT be a smart TV due to the updating merry go round that leaves the end user high and dry..just like TIVO.

Be prepared for a pretty low spec TV then. I understand what you're trying to say but the fact is that any decent screen will, by default, be a 'Smart TV'.

Yep, I agree, but 10 years for a device with a HDD? Ive had Panny DVRs since the $1800 one I got. Its still goes I think, not a great deal of use, but its SD only. I cant claim on that. The TIVO issue is quite unique, there are many takes n it that you can say, forget it its over, and others where you can say, its not over. The boxes are not going to fail on 1 Nov, they will work exactly as they have done. Play, record, and so on. The box has an ongoing life. But the licence doesnt, and thats part of the software. I can see lawyers in a trial one arguing the box (hardware) the other arguing the software.

No they won't work exactly as before. No EPG means extremely limited functionality compared to what they were.

They do. Tivo works exactly as before. The other half, the service, doesnt. Take a Panny DVR, its a Freeview authorised DVR. Tivo is not a Freeview authorised PVR, although it does use Freeview legitimately, but also in a proprietary manner. That is why the Tivo box and the service are separate. Hybrid takes over the EPG function and alters it to the Tivo way.

One interesting thing about Tivo is their units last a long, long time. 17 years and they were still going strong! If you are after a durable bit of electronic kit, you wouldn't want to look past a Tivo.

MadEngineer: I'm late to this thread, but has any work been done on a hack to provide the TiVo box with an alternative to listing source? Or is it too difficult to reverse engineer the source and stick in a static DNS entry ... nat redirect or other ...

This has been on ongoing project on Whirlpool, long before this announcement (remember there have been some fairly long outages of EPG data in recent months).

A static DNS entry won't work - you actually need the content for the Tivo to access it. Unlike the Gen1 Tivo where people could do this, it seems like a project that may not be possible.

I wonder if Hybrid/Tivo could release an update so it unlocks the hardware. It would solve so many problems. I have emailed Tivo Oz myself, but they don't appear to be replying to emails, and their websites contact form possibly could broken.

Oh, if it wasn't clear I meant to suggest reverse engineering the content and redirecting the traffic from your TiVo device to your own content generator.

The TiVo only accepts encrypted content from their own servers. If someone was to break that encryption, your plan would work.

And TiVo would have them in court so fast their heads would spin.

Tivo don't even have a presence in NZ, they may hire a lawyer to represent them, but do you really think they would waste their money and i'm pretty sure anyone they took a claim against would start asking why they prematurely cut off the product lifetime service

If that box was hacked in NZ, they might not care, but considering that hack would open boxes worldwide, I think you'll find it's a different kettle of fish.

Is anyone in NZ even trying? People around the world are, and have been since the series one hack, and it hasn't happened yet.

Maybe their latest boxes use the same encryption... They use the same servers.

Which means if that encryption was cracked, their whole business model is gone. Do you really think a multi-billion dollar company would let that happen?

Lol

edit: There's also the fact they have to be mod chipped before any of this can happen.

the box has actually reached it's end of lifecycle, it was brought to market in 2006.  any series 3 in the states that break down or account is disconnected are not reconnected or fixed.  Hybrid brought brought a product to NZ that was old, people just need to get on with it and move on.  It is not going to be hacked, no one is going to keep pushing an EPG to it, and no one is going to get compenstation for a product that is this old.  why do you think they waited so long to end it in nz, the talk that they were wraping up has been around for years but they worked out what their legal obligations were and kept it going until they met that.

It was a good box, and it is on it's last legs.  even my 70 year old parents when they got the email picked it up, put it in the rubbish and went and brought something else.

3,500 Series 1 were still going strong after 17 years before the software came to an end

I was tempted to do the same thing.  After pausing for a bit, I'm going to enjoy the last 6 months with the service working.

With around 2 months to go, I'll take another look at what is available, and probably try a MythTV box with a HDHomeRun dual tuner.  If that works well and has a high WAF then I might add a second tuner to get a total of 4.  If not, I'm really not sure what the next best plan will be.  Could be a Panny box but given mixed reviews, I would want to give one a try before committing.

And may I ask what did they buy instead and are they still happy with their new purchase?

I can't understand why they said that after they got the email, they picked it up and put it in the rubbish, when it is still perfectly usable for the next 6 months. Something doesn't addup, unless it had a problem, beucase why replace something that still has life in it. In the meantime something better may come along, as the current options are poor if you want some things as simple as a TiVo. You can even get 30 dollars for it on trademe, although this announcement seriously reduced the value of the TiVo hardware overnight.

Yes and whose to say something might not be revived? TVNZ had an interest, Kiwi company, they might wangle an EPG continuity for a while more.

I dont get the bad press about the the Panny. Freeview works. It dosnt have a grid but thats pretty much about it. And a bit slow to load the EPG. The latest BWT760 seems to have FV+ issues, that isnt relevant for a Tivo comparison

The problem is it is very difficult to test PVRs prior to purchase, to find out how good they really are. Some retailers do provide a returns policy, but it is usually for credit than a refund, unless the product has a fault.
