Telecom, in the letter that they sent to us. Although my recollection may have distorted the actual nature of the work, it was definitely stating that unmetering was happening due to work being undertaken by Telecom.

Tivo upgrades to operate with the new OzTivo EPG, support and service. Over 400 performed here so far. See: www.hillcrest.net.nz

Quite possibly. So while it may have been Tivo related work, we as non-Tivo users (but Tivo owners (it was a contract signing bonus (and will be used if we ever ditch Sky (which is quite likely now that we have NetFlix running (is there a limit to nested comments?))))) still benefited.

I currently have 3 tivos which are all in use. Have no idea how much data they use. I am wondering if telecom have just decided to now meter all traffic, or they have actually fixed the problem with tivo traffic unable to be separated. I have only been with telecom for just over a year so haven't benefited from the unmetering as long as some people appear to have. I do regularly move ISPs every 1-2 years, as ISPs tend to offer better deals for new customers than existing ones, and plans change regually.

If you are happy with speed and reliability and after having unmetered service for years, why bother changing?

My guess is that because the service has changed for the worse that some people will take a review of their ISP options.

For Fs sake folks . Do you expect a free lunch forever?? I have a TiVo and it's never been unmetered . I have a 150 Gig plan and even with QuickFlix I don't use more that 60 ~ 70gig / month. Stop whining and increase your cap..

Noone is complaining about the loss of the 'free lunch'.

They are rightly complaining that they were told that they would be notified but were not.

Seems fair enough if true.

If you are happy with speed and reliability and after having unmetered service for years, why bother changing?

Looking around this afternoon I can save upwards of $30 per month on another provider with better allowances. I have not changed due to the TiVo unmetering bonus. Now it appears to have gone I am heading out to market to get the best deal I can.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I would recommend holding off from changing provider until Telecom provides an official answer as to whether this metering was intended or not. Based on the initial lack of awareness from their frontline staff regarding this issue, my gut feeling is that is was all just an unintended system issue at their end and that they will revert us back to being unmetered (at least for a while longer).

I would doubt it was unintentional, because telecom staff have recently said that it was coming to an end very soon. I have emailed telecom support last night for an explanation as to why we never received notification, but have yet to get any answer.

I have setup notifications for when I get close to using my quota, however I noticed when trying ot setup a mobile reminder, that they will only accept telecom numbers. Their explaination is as follows

For anti-spam reasons alert texts can only be sent to Telecom mobile numbers.

I can't understand why it makes any difference, as once you enter a number you agree to receive txts, no matter what provider you use.

I was an unmetered Tivo user, so dropped my plan from 150GB to 80GB ages ago, and saved myself some coin ever since. Haven't changed my browsing habits all that much, so will jump back on the 150GB plan. I've been waiting for this day, and while disappointed that it is here, am not going to lose too much sleep over not getting a letter in the post telling me something that I knew was coming soon. I feel for the people with kids burning through data, but there are tools that will monitor this for you. I run Net Usage within Firefox, and just noticed today that the bar had moved. Jumped on here to confirm, but didn't expect to see all the pitchforks out :)

There are quite a few providers that now offer unlimited traffic, so those people would probably be better switching to one of those providers. As per other posts, people aren't annoyed that it is coming to ad end, just that there was no prior notification, which was promised as per the letter we initially received. I suspect there will be many people who will still not be aware that metering has been enabled, and will hit their cap in the coming days or weeks, so haven't had the opportunity to adjust their usage.

Not surprised they have started metering again, but am annoyed they didnt tell anyone. We had dropped down to a 40gb tarrif a while back and our monthly sub rolled over this month so just checked and yep 2.5gb used already.

Oh well, time to move ISP ASAP then.
