Can you quick skip the ads with Tivo - either by intelligent chapter jumping or several 30sec jump forward button presses?

Am just a little confused about the ad-skipping ability.

The MyTIVO NZ FAQ states: "...the fast forward feature DOES allow viewers to fast track through advertisements when viewing recorded programmes, there is no ability to skip advertisements."

But a recent Panasonic PVR review states: "... Panasonic does have a few tricks up its sleeve, such as the ability to skip forward through the ad breaks in 58 second increments - a feature Australian TiVo users are denied."

The Panasonic recorder likely has a button you can press which skips ahead 58 seconds (thus skip ads) rather than have to sit with your finger on the fast forward button. Tivo in the USA has/has/has hidden a '30 second skip' feature. When used it does the same thing but in 30 second increments. I believe this feature will NOT be enabled in NZ (it isn't enabled either in OZ).

The TiVo has a 30 second skip button which has been disabled in AU (and as said, in NZ).. but you can fast forward still at say 2* its speed or whatever it goes up to like MyskyHD

I wonder how fast the FAST FORWARDING is? I've had a Sony DVR for a couple of years and LOVE the 30sec / 1min / 2min jumps. Haven't seen an ad for 2 years!

Makes you wonder if being "controlled" by Tivo is worth it, (ie no ad skipping, downloaded movies deleting themselves after xx days) or if a PVR like Panasonic with a built in DVD/BluRay would be better? (Sacrificing "wishlists" and "season pass" features)

I checked out the Pana 350 (DVD recorder / Twin Freeview Tuners / 250Gig Drive)

It was on special this weekend in ChCh, Harvey Norman @ $888 - down from $1299

It has a normal 7-day Freeview EPG which you can use to create your own record lists manually. ie: Select the EPG, select the program, it inputs the channel + start/stop times, then you modify - extend etc to suit. Like a poor mans "Tivo season-pass" in effect.

I checked out a few online reviews - most are very negative unfortunately. Slating the cumbersome levels and layers of menus, slooooow response times "making channel surfing unbearable".

Darn shame.

The Panasonic units do not have the 8 day EPG as they do not support MHEG5. All you get is the now+next transmitted within the DVB EIT table.

Why would anyone buy this then??? In the specs, it says EPG: DVB-T (What's that in English?)

The box uses the EIT EPG. In New Zealand Freeview|HD does not use the EIT table for transmitting the 8 day EPG.

As for why anybody would buy one there are plenty of reasons - it's just that the box has the rather serious downfall of not having an EPG because Panasonic obviously don't see the value in implimenting MHEG5 for the NZ marketplace at present.
