Checked mine. EPG turns to custard on some channels next Wednesday. Thursday onwards is "to be advised". I thought it was a 2 week EPG but have a feeling that was reduced? If so looks like all is well.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I think it normally should be showing 2 weeks for most channels.

I ended up buying a BeeBOX from PBTech (see ASRock BeeBOX J3160B on PB Tech's website - but, wait for specials!) and added two sticks of RAM (as it runs better than a Celeron Intel NUC due to Dual Channel RAM), a cheap 32GB mSATA drive (off TradeMe) for OS & Kodi, and a 512GB SATA SSD Drive (for recordings). All up $565 and a nice tidy little box that runs great!

I also went for a Hauppauge WinTV-DualHD USB tuner ($114) as it gives you two tuners (but only uses one USB port and you only need one antenna connection) so allows recording of up to 4 TV programs at once (across two muxes).

I followed your Libreelec/Kodi and TVHeadend install instructions and followed Matt's set-up & configuration instructions (see the "[How To] Libreelect TVHeadend Setup for Freeview NZ" post on Matt's Huisman's blog) . Apart from a couple of mistakes on my part (my typo's, etc), it all works really impressively well.

Actually, I was surprised how well it worked, and how quick and easy it was to build and get going. I started this "little project" early, prior to Tivo ending, as I thought it may take a while to get sorted and bedded in, but I'm all go with my Tivo replacement now, and very happy.

For the remote I've trained it to use my TIVO remote, yes, thats right, TIVO remote, so at least the remote will live on........

Freeview epg feed all set and ready.

Yet to get a usb dual tuner that I think will work with ubuntu 16.04, before I can continue as seems mythtv needs the channels first before it can load in the epg schedule.

The tivo genie seems to have 2 weeks of listings on it, so maybe it is the same technical problem they had previously, with sending that data to the tivo units.

Correct, in MythTV you have to have a video source and attached tuners configured to get EPG. But you can make a video source with a dummy tuner if you want to try things out before you have an actual tuner. For a dummy tuner, create a tuner with the Card Type set to "Import test recorder" or "Demo test recorder" and point it to an MPEG or TS video file somewhere. You can later add real tuners to the video source and delete the dummy tuner.

New USB dual DVB-T or DVB-T2 tuners that are Linux compatible are a bit thin on the ground. I have one that said it was compatible, but if you ever use both of its tuners at once it fails as the driver does not have proper locking of the hardware that is used by both tuners to prevent them from both using it at the same time. There used to be a TBS5281 dual DVB-T2 USB tuner, but it looks like it is now out of stock and there is no dual tuner replacement model:

The Hauppauge WinTV DualHD only has partial support with a >= 4.7 kernel and a kernel patch, last I heard.

If you can find a second hand dual DVB-T model, there are several to choose from that do work. But it is unlikely you will find anything in NZ.

There are plenty of single tuner DVB-T2 or DVB-T USB tuners that do work with Linux. They can be a better option than using a dual tuner, as most dual tuners will have a builtin splitter, providing each of the two tuners with sligtly less than half the signal from the one aerial signal that you provide. Since you are likely to already be splitting the aerial to go to your TV as well as the new tuners, you wind up with a 2-way splitter feeding 50% signal to the TV and 50% to the dual tuner, which then splits the signal again and you only get 25% at each of its tuners. If you use individual USB tuners, you can use one 3-way splitter and provide 33% signal to the TV and each of the USB tuners.

If you (or your family) are heavy TV watchers, you will likely need at least 3 DVB-T tuners to make sure that you can record from all the major TV channels at the same time. If you want to record from TVNZ, Mediaworks and also Prime at the same time, they are on three different muxes and need a tuner each. Sometimes there are repeats on Prime that can help as you can record the repeat later in the week. Ideally, you should have 4 tuners so that you can record from all the muxes at the same time, but most people find that 3 is enough as other useful channels such as ChoiceTV and HGTV have at least 2 repeats of all programmes to record from if there is a clash.

Hello. i have found this above page, & it compares various things about freeview devices. but it does not compare the important things. Is there a good page to compare different versions/products of Freeview devices ?

- the cost to buy (average - I know prices go up/down )

- how many hours can i record (do different devices have increased recording?)

- channels i can record at the same time etc.. - im guessing all versions can record at least 2 channels at once ?

- can i buy two units & record / transfer to either/both at same time (double the storage etc) - NOT on a PC - but transfer recordings between devices.

Also, is there a quick guide on how the EPG works.. what kind of variables can we record by

- record by full / partial title,

- record by specific channel (we want to record NEWS ion TV3 only - not all channels....)

- other types of recording options we can have.. etc...

any videos of how the freeview interface looks - & is it the same look/feel/functionality on all freeview devices ?

You won't find much info on that, because there simply aren't many options.

Freeview devices should all be relatively similar, especially around the EPG, as this is a standardised plug-in. You typically find the program you want to record, then have an option to record a one off, or select this series to record. The Freeview EPG is not ant smarter than that.

Hours of recording is directly linked to the hard drive size.

If you can transfer the recordings off the device, and often if you can, these are in the native TS format, so aren't a standard video file.

I've had these in mind, and yur post prompted me to order one to have a play with. I need something with a high WAF to replace our two Tivo units, so while I dont plan to replace the Tivo until October (wringing the longest possible life out of it), I guess I had better have its replacement properly tested and working well before that date.

Likely I'll consult with the previous poster who has a solution running using the Tivo remote. Those remotes are nicely laid out, work with the TV's basic functions, and we have a new unused spare that I bought cheaply some time ago (alongside the two remotes in use already).

Is the HD Homerun tuner you're talking about a stand-alone device, or a tuner that needs to work as a part of a wider system (eg an HTPC running Linux)?

It's a network tuner. You need a device and software to show the stream - a HTPC or a game console with proper software.

I've got three Tivos, so bit of a problem in a few months...

Each TV also has a raspberry PI attached, so am I right in thinking that the HD Homerun might be a good option? (rather than buy new boxes for each TV I can centralise a bit more).
