Yes, IMHO, especially for those wanting a PVR in more than one location, the best system is to have a server and multiple frontends.

I have stated my preference earlier in this thread (MythTV) but there are others such as TVHeadend

You can also have multiple HDHomeruns to watch/record more channels simultaneously.

I've replaced my TiVo with a Panasonic, so if anyone in ChCh would like the TiVo they are welcome to it.

Otherwise it is destined for the skip.

You will still probably get something for it on trademe. However with the announcement, they pretty much killed any value it had.

I can't figure this out, I added a demo test recorder like you said, but still get Column 'channum' cannot be null.

I just tried this out on my test PC by installing a completely clean mythconverg database and then adding a demo test recorder. I found that for it to work, you need to manually create one channel using mythtv-setup. I gave it channel number 1 and set it to use my Dummy video source. Then I went back to Input Connections and set the starting channel there to channel 1. After that, from mythfrontend the Watch TV option plays the file the you have attached to your demo test recorder tuner.

Once that is working, you can try using EPG. Setting it up is a bit complicated, so I may not have remembered all the steps. First, get a copy of tv_grab_nz-py (the NZ EPG grabber for MythTV) from here:

http://nice.net.nz/tv_grab_nz-py/

and put it in your /usr/local/bin directory and make sure it is executable:

cd /usr/local/bin

sudo chown root:root tv_grab_nz-py

sudo chmod a=rwx tv_grab_nz-py

Then you should be able to run mythtv-setup again and go into the channel's settings again and give it a real xmltvid value (such as "choice.freeviewnz.tv" for ChoiceTV) and go to your dummy video source and set it up to use the New Zealand listings grabber. Exit mythtv-setup and it should not give any errors.

You now need to create a file in the .mythtv directory of your MythTV frontend user. If you are using a standard setup, the MythTV frontend user is normally your name, so for me the directory is /home/stephen/.mythtv. In there, you need to create file with the same name (including case) as your dummy video source, and with a .xmltv extension. So mine would be Dummy.xmltv. In that file, you list all the xmltvid values that are valid for the channels you want. So if you have put choice.freeviewnz.tv on your dummy channel, then use that in the Dummy.xmltv file. The lines in the Dummy.xmltv file should look like:

channel=choice.freeviewnz.tv

You can also use lines like

channel!choice.freeviewnz.tv

to exclude a channel so it does not cause error messages.

After that, you should now be able to try getting EPG. Run this command from a normal (not root) command prompt:

mythfilldatabase

and see what happens. If it works, you should get EPG dispayed for your dummy channel in mythfrontend > Manage Recordings > Schedule Recordings > Programme Guide.

Note that I have not actually tried setting up EPG for a dummy channel like this, as I do not have time tonight. Let me know if you have a problem and I should be able to test it out tomorrow night.

Surely it can be used to at least run a Linux distro? Is that even possible? At least then I could still use it as a network file server or something similar.

Yea I heard something like that.

I like the Tivo casing. Come 31st October I may just rip the insides out and install my Raspberry pi 3 into the Tivo case. I can probably even make use of the Tivo power supply to power the pi. I need to experiment to see if I can get the Tivo remote working with an IR receiver and OSMC. That will be awesome if it could work. Long live the Tivo.

Thinking of doing the same thing here. I've ripped the guts out of an old VCR before and installed a mini-ITX board, with a DVD drive replacing the tape mechanism. Was thinking of either another mini-ITX or Raspberry pi 3. Connected to an HDHomeRun perhaps?

I changed a while ago to using EIT.

It is easier to set up and seems reliable.

Yes, EIT has worked since they started broadcasting full EPG on DVB-T EIT a couple of years ago. But it does not have any post-processing done on it, so when you happily expect that series upmty of your favourite programme is being recorded for you, you can find that the stupid idiots who make up the EPG data for our main TV broadcasters have added "All New" on the front of the title and it is no longer recording as the title does not match! The downloaded EPG has "All New" automatically removed. You can do that yourself by using epgsnoop to get the EIT EPG or mhegepgsnoop to get the official Freeview MHEG5 EPG data, then run xmltv-proc-nz on it with the right settings, before getting mythfilldatabase to send the data to mythbackend. I use a combination of the downloaded EPG and my own mhegepgsnoop/xmltv-proc-nz EPG with some extra processing, as the downloaded EPG is missing some channels (eg Apna, Bravo+1). I merge in the missing channels to the downloaded data before running my extra processing.

However, in this particular case, the OP does not have a tuner yet and is using a dummy tuner - so he can not get the EIT data anyway. His only option is to use the downloaded data.

Slight variation, I've read Dish TV devices have a feature where if you set a programme to record but it can't record in the timeslot allocated due to clashes, it'll automatically record the same episode on the +1 channel if available.

Are custom built MythTV or Libreelec/Kodi with TVHeadend devices able to do something similar? i.e. automatically record first run episodes on a +1 channel if the primary channel/timeslot can't be used?
