Stu: Thinking of doing the same thing here. I've ripped the guts out of an old VCR before and installed a mini-ITX board, with a DVD drive replacing the tape mechanism. Was thinking of either another mini-ITX or Raspberry pi 3. Connected to an HDHomeRun perhaps?

I did that in about 2004. Except it wasn't mini ITX. Made a great talking point. "Why do you still have a VCR?"

Are custom built MythTV or Libreelec/Kodi with TVHeadend devices able to do something similar? i.e. automatically record first run episodes on a +1 channel if the primary channel/timeslot can't be used?

Yep, my libreelec + TVHeadend setup does that (automajically)...

MythTV can certainly do that. In fact it defaults to doing that (recording from any channel it can) unless you deliberately set the "This channel only" option on a recording rule. You can use priority settings to tell it what to record when there is a clash, or just let it juggle the possibilities of recording from the main channel, the +1 channel or a later repeat. If it chooses something you do not like (maybe you want to watch an episode today it has put off recording until a repeat later in the week), you can add an "override" rule to force it to record the episode you want today, and it will reschedule all the recordings around that to see if it can make it work, and tell you if it can not still record everything.

MythTV also allows you to make "power search" rules, where you can write some MySQL script to tell it the conditions for recording something. That has all sorts of interesting uses - for example, on my mother's MythTV box, I have a power rule for recording Coronation Street episodes only after 17:00 each day, so it does not record the repeats in the afternoon. This is the MySQL script for that:

program.title = 'Coronation Street' and time(convert_tz(program.starttime, 'UTC', 'NZ')) >= '17:00:00'

Normally you would not need that power rule as MythTV remembers all previous recordings it has made (forever) and will not record a repeat of anything it has previously recorded unless specifically told to do so. But TVNZ often do the Coronation Steet repeats differently from the evening episodes, splitting and joining the original British half-hour episodes in different ways so that MythTV can not tell they are repeats. My mother was unable to cope with that and would wind up watching repeats of episodes she had already seen, until I wrote the power rule for her.

Trouble is, the HWT units have a lot of functionality removed, and I think it's worth a premium to get the more feature-rich BWT models.

I only paid $51 more than that at JB HiFi to get the BWT840 model, which I regard as a much more functional unit (AV in, the ability to burn to disk etc).

I was going to say the same thing. :) Is that a DVD or Bluray, or can you send the file to a PC? This was the big benefit of tivo, you could save programs forever on your harddrive.

I have a garage full of them. Was part of the original testing group but I found them badly made hence the garage full. Actually only about 4 now. yes the networking feature was good. I switched out ages ago to Panasonic which does everything I need. With more and more streaming services now available recording stuff off air seems a bit old fashioned. Last time I watched FTA was quite a while back.

Tivo is still going in USA the reason that it did not catch on here was letting TVNZ and Telecom handle it. It should have been marketed like any other consumer item and sold through all the usual stores. Disaster from the word go.

What do you mean by badly made? I think they have been proven to be well made, considering how many are still working today. They are what they are, and do their job well, and as NZ TV technology hasn't really moved on since freeview was introduced, they are still as up to date as they need to be. I can see the tech being outdated once we move to a fully streaming service. But even Sky TV use similar PVR tech in their boxes, and PVRs will have a place why were have direct OTA TV broadcasts. Plus they aren't affected by 'buffering' and internet outages, which is a constamt pain with streaming using chromecasts etc, not that NZ TV stations allow the casting of streaming programs .

They were subject to a heavy return rate because of failures in the hard disk etc.
Yes it's fairly easy to replace disk and reload the TiVo software but the average user would not want to do that. Telecom would just swap it out at the beginning but as time went on they lost interest.

The basic DMR-HWT260GN which is sold in NZ and Aussie is a dual market model, as you choose your country on startup. It doesn't appear that the DMRBWT955GL model you linked to is sold here (yet) so whether it supports NZ frequencies and Freeview+ will depend on whether Panasonic have chosen to support our market with suitable firmware. I see a slightly lower spec model with 1TB HDD, the DMR-BWT760GN is sold here. The final 2x letters in the model, i.e. GN are probably the regions they support from what I can gather.

Tivo upgrades to operate with the new OzTivo EPG, support and service. Over 400 performed here so far. See: www.hillcrest.net.nz

I believe they had a very hard DOA rate, as I had three failures out of the box. But once going they seem to be rock solid, as I have 3 which are all running fine, and friends and family who I suggested to are also all running fine. I beleive the harddrives can also be replaced if they do fail, and HDs are almost a consumable, as they will always fail eventually
