I would recommend holding off from changing provider until Telecom provides an official answer as to whether this metering was intended or not. Based on the initial lack of awareness from their frontline staff regarding this issue, my gut feeling is that is was all just an unintended system issue at their end and that they will revert us back to being unmetered (at least for a while longer).

Thanks again Troy for providing confirmation. I'm glad it turned out to be just a fault. In terms of when metering is likely to start again officially, I would imagine a significant number of Telecom employees (possibly including those that hold the reins to this metering project) also own a TiVo and are enjoying the benefits of unmetered usage just as much as we are, so where's the incentive for them to rush this? After all, this unmetering has been going on and off since 2009, so where's the harm in delaying this for another few years? Sounds like a win-win situation to me. Consider the alternative: If the metering was to resume very soon, Telecom will lose some of their customers who will look elsewhere for better value plans, and every single one of their employees who own a TiVo will be worse off, and likely disgruntled to some extent. The question is: Is Telecom taking a significant hit financially in keeping TiVo customers unmetered? If not then I don't see why TiVo customers shouldn't be unmetered indefinitely. Would it be unfair to those that don't have TiVo? It would seem that way, but then again they didn't spend hundreds purchasing this piece of hardware.

I switched to VDSL late last year , my connection has stayed unmetered until now , yes after seeing this thread i logged in and i am metered again :(

pretty glad to see this thread as i have gotten used to not logging into mytelecom to check my usuage

and agree a email or even a letter notifying of us back to being metered would be nice of Telecom

Thanks Troy.

Prompted me to look elsewhere however and found some pretty good (cheaper) package deals for an upgraded service with more than enough data to the point where TiVo un-metering is no longer of any consequence for us. Each to their own of course...but this 'error' and the poor communication around it has indirectly cost at least 1 lifetime Telecom customer. Is the grass greener elsewhere? I guess I am about to find out :-)

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

We were always intending to switch to Snap UFB, even if this was just a temporary fault and our account will soon be unmetered again we will be switching (signed up yesterday). Snap's discounted 100/50 deal is due to end at the end of April so I have to say thanks Telecom for the fault, I would have procrastinated longer and missed the deal if this fault hadn't occured.

I was also told last year when enquiring that if we upgraded to VDSL the un-metering wouldn't apply. I checked this again yesterday with 3 people I spoke to at Telecom/TiVo support and they all said the same thing. Left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing yet again it seems. To late for me, gone!

To expand a little on the fault I mentioned last night: It was because of an upgrade we're making to one of our rating systems which touches upon broadband and mobile services.

What I can assure of you of is that the usage recorded this week wasn't the result of any plans to rate TiVo use again. We are reviewing this, however if we were to make any changes to the way we manage the data then we'd be sure to inform all TiVo users before doing so.

I can live with this being a fault which was resolved fairly quickly, however what I didn't appreciate was the way my enquiries were handled by Telecom's call centre staff. Instead of them acknowledging the metering as a potential fault that needed further investigation, they assumed that this was all planned and that they weren't told about this. It is as though the left hand has gotten so used to not knowing what the right hand is doing, that it has now gotten to the point where when anything that is unexpected occurs, the left hand assumes the right hand is doing it.

I would not have bothered to start this thread had the call centre staff been more careful with the info they dish out to their customers who may treat this info as "official" . Basically they need to confirm with the proper channels instead of jumping to conclusions on their own.

Maybe Telecom (AKA Spark) could switch TiVo users over to unlimited plans as a gesture of goodwill ?
BTW metering has stopped as of yesterday :)

I'll probably still switch when unmetering stops. $109 is still more expensive then what others are charging, and have no interest in ultra mobile plan.

If I find who ever I switch to to be no good, then I'll come back. Though people I know on other isps unlimited seem to be happy with them.
