I have seen that for sale in NZ....but was only 500mb HDD.

Have started a new targeted thread for Tivo replacements, would be good to have this conversation on it.

Well I'm sure most of us still have the old Sky satellite dish on the roof so could easily get 3 tuners going.

Yes it does. I have one I bought about 4 years ago.

It is not as easy to use as TiVo but not bad.

I don't use it any more as my MythTV server has multiple "frontends" around the house as well as the other benefits previously mentioned.

Ha - I thought it was just me that thought "Now Showing" was a really weird way of describing what had been recorded!

 

Be mindful TiVo is American invented years before we got them at a time when home entertainment systems were just becoming a thing even before the phrase "Home Theatre" was used.  At risk of being laughed at their naming conventions are actually quite logical for the time and were relatable to alternative entertainment options.

As I interpret it Now Showing is no different to cinemas when you walk in the door to their menu above the Box Office of Now Showing and Coming Soon.  Ever wondered why Sky have a service called Box Office?  The movie you have gone to see is also not live, it was shot/recorded several months prior.  Likewise the background 'search lights' and light bulbs across the front of the stage are a nod to stage plays etc...

It is quite dated now and screenshots I've seen of new TiVo's are very different... but ours are a snapshot of time from 8 years ago when many net connections were still dial-up and broadband speeds started at 128kB/s.

Really nice.  It makes me real sad to see how we've been shafted down here..

There is still scope for someone to bring a modern TiVo box here, but the reality at the moment (especially with the increase in smart capable TV's) is that the demand for such a box just isn't there.

TiVo seem to use a local distributor model, so any other company could pick up the local license, now that it's been freed up by Hybrid.


Old people seem to be the main target, who want a standard interaction with the device.  Smart TV's are very clunky to use by comparison, especially with that freeview plus crap coming in from the side every time the TV turns on.  Even using the freeivew plus apps required registering on those websites in advance etc.  The whole 'freeview' UI is rubbish, and that's where TiVo filled a niche, but I don't think the demand is there anymore.  A TiVo box with Netflix support could work though.

Well I have the latest LG smart TV but I'm still using the tivo the most right now..

Reason being being able to pause live TV, Recording, Series record, The ease of the Guide, the remote control is great with buttons just where you want them.

on the LG TV the guide takes ages to load, it can record but is not user friendly, the remote is a smart remote and is better but the Tivo one is the best.

It is a wonder someone hasn't bought out a Smart TV with 2 tuners and a hard disk PVR built in.

That would be a winner !

Yes, smart TV's... so long as the manufacturer continues to support their own installed apps.  I read something on Stuff or NZ Herald a few months ago about the frustration of people who buy their expensive Smart TVs/devices only to find some apps no longer work two years later.  As the streaming services change their APIs and platforms, the TV manufacturer often has no intension of updating their own apps as they are in the business of selling TVs which if they update will never be replaced.  I know my own four year old Sony Blu-Ray player (top of the line when new) has many apps though a number of them (including YouTube) no longer work and have heard similar stories of other brands.

Modern TiVo's are kitted out with all apps for everything and given they operate with a large customer subscription basis they are very motivated to keep it maintained.  It's much easier than only being able to watch 'x' service via a Samsung TV, 'y' service requires a Chromecast etc...
