Don't people just stream online for series record as such now?

Agree TV based PVRs are usually rubbish, but there are alternatives provided in the smart TV, via Freeview plus or apps for example.

That's my point. For those who stream, how does the average person do that for everything they want to watch with an average entertainment setup? TVNZ only in the last few days finally released a native Chromecast app. ThreeNow still don't have a Chromecast app. How would an average person watch Neon or Amazon Prime content without stuffing around with additional devices because their "smart TV" doesn't have or no longer supports suitable apps?

Modern TiVo's have all this stuff built in. No screen mirroring, no casting or plugging a laptop into a TV input - all natively installed apps.

Nz streaming content has no captioning and you cannot skip adds easily.

I have found that when using pi-hole, I get no ads when watching TVNZ on demand, so no ads to skip.

That's the big question for sure. It's awfully complex. We trialled a 30 Neon offering, and then found we couldn't watch it on the TV, as there's no Android TV app for it (I may investigate sideloading it, but again, average person?).

The current TiVo that's ending soon sure doesn't do this either, so really we're saying there is a market for a smart box, and one that all suppliers will opt to support.

Reality check is, after the botched implementation, there's not enough support for TiVo shown in this country for anyone to take the plunge and bring it in. Which is a total shame, as the concept was sound.

I suspect Freeview Plus is the answer put forward. This gives the ability to stream from the main TV providers on demand, right in the TV device. It may not be a nice interface really, but it does exist, and has more coverage now than TiVo by far (given it's in all new TV devices by default).

100% agree. There are a number of VoD services available now (and more to come I hear) but watching many of them appear to be a total headache. I like to think I have some clues around this stuff but if it takes time to set up, connect, authenticate, figure out how to navigate that particular service to watch one episode of something I won't bother. I refuse to watch TV with high end production values, HD and Dolby 5.1 on a phone or tablet. Yes there are those who just have Netflix and that's all they need/want which is great but as the VoD world is now so fragmented it's chaos. One device, common navigation interface and supports all services would be a winner but unfortunately think that ship has sailed...

The latest LG smart TV i have has freeview plus on it as well but to tell you the truth I havent even used it apart from the guide, its better than the standard freeview guide. Still slow for a startoff though when opened.

To be honest I hardly watch freeview on the new TV as it can't pause record etc. Everything is still watched on the Tivo box.

I only switch to the LG Tv to watch Netflix, If I had a set top box with Netflix on it everything would be watched on that..

Its going to be hard replacing my Tivo. 3 Months to go and I still dont have a real solution.

I think TVNZ chromecast implementation is still a beta as it often stops with an error when I tried to watch a program. But it is all improving. TV companies should love ondemand, because it gets around the skipping ads problem with PVRs

Yes exactly, we have been spoilt by Tivo with the ease of use and controller.

NetFlix is getting a lot of use as Spark gave me 1 year free Netflix and 3 months free internet and at least you can pause/rewind netflix

So how does NF compare to FTA??? They are totally different animals. Not even comparable.

Well it doesn't really as Netflix is a paid service, you could compare it to Sky's service you paid for I guess but it beats Sky hands down.

Netflix is full of content, series that we don't even get here and all full length movies. No adverts either and all are in ultra HD, a lot are streamed in 4K as well..

A lot of the content wouldn't even get to Sky or FTA here. Sky and FTA are full of repeats and adverts right now, No Adverts on Netflix :)

For Example: how many times has filthy rich on TV2 tonight been shown on FTA now.

Netflix is not free but at $18 a month its well worth it, I think. I don't have SKY, sent that back when it went over $110 a month a couple of years ago.

So if I'm going to pay for content I want plenty of choice and Netflix satisfies that. If there is nothing on FTA straight to Netflix I go. :)
