Another thing which I don't understand:

Why does Sky paid TV have a lot of adverts on it. I can understand why Free to Air TV has adverts as that pays for the service.

But SkyTv that you are paying a lot of money for should be advert free shouldn't it ????

SkyTV are also relying on FTA Tv for a lot of series content. If you took FTA broadcasting off Sky what is left ???

Repeat Movies, Adverts, Box office that you have to pay extra for, and sport if you have all the top packages and a PVR which you never own !!

Without FTA broadcasts included on Sky it would die very quickly.

Exactly. Why on earth do Radio New Zealand put their programmes on Sky when it is already available on Freeview. Methinks it is just a scheme to transfer money from RNZ to Sky.

Sky do have a decent PVR, even if you usually don't own it. I'd rate it as easy as TiVo, from a standard end user perspective.

Bottom line nowadays is that if you are paying for Sky, for anything other than live sport, there are cheaper alternatives.

Does show the power of a decent single box, one stop shop though.

This is actually a very good point, and may be seen as a very good Tivo replacement to some.

I recall when we cancelled our Sky subscription a few years ago we were given the option o keep the PVR, with freeview only. It was not free, but if I recall correctly they were only asking about $10 per month or something. We got rid of it anyway because we had Tivo. I wonder if this is still an option with Sky? Do they allow freeview channels only?

$18 per month IIRC for Sky FTA. If you had the MySky instead of the basic STB player, thats probably plus the MySky rental of 15 or 20 a month

So around $38 a month for FTA only sky box. But you still dont own it and cant get external apps on ?

I agree that the remote is user friendly like tivo is though and the interface is good.

I remember when MySky box first came out, you could pay $799 up front or pay a monthly fee for it.

I paid the $799 upfront but I didn't really realise it was theirs still, until I left sky then they wanted it back.

I went back to sky to get something, I think it was the soccer world cup as my wife is crazy on it.

I asked them if I could have the MySky box back as I had already paid the $799, answer was no and had to rent it and pay extra for HD ticket :(

Yes same with us, perhaps thats why we could get freeview for so much cheaper as there was no box to rent.

Because RNZ is a genuine public broadcaster their thing is to ensure their content paid for with public money (taxes) is available for everyone to easily access and across multi platforms. Broadcasting on Sky is either Sky relaying RNZ's existing Freeview satellite channel or because it's effectively free Sky include it being a good corporate media citizen <cough><cough>.

I've read somewhere the Stuff deal is thought to be a short term experiment for RNZ to dip their toes in the water working with corporate media with some revenue sharing from page advertising in return. If successful it will become a permanent fixture. Ultimately as taxpayers already pay for the content, so long as it's attributed back to RNZ I think it's just formalising the relationship.

Yep, it's not even the rental fee for the MySky Plus box that annoys me because at least it's being supported and upgraded/replaced if it fails. My beef is yet another fee in addition to the box for being able to watch the content you already pay for in HD!! You know, on the more than capable HD set top box you're already paying for? I understand Sky is a corporate and their shareholders want a return on their investment aka maximising profit but in 2017 still charging to view HD that is being transmitted from the same satellite regardless is stupid.

Netflix actually does the same thing. The basic plan does not include HD, you pay more for HD.

I guess HD means more bandwidth, so its justifiable for Sky Satellite. Not so much for Netflix.

I also read the other day that the reason why you can't get HD on FTA Satellite is because Sky has bought all the HD Bandwidth on the satellite..

How many programs does sky have that are HD, its not all of them is it ??

That's true but on Amazon Prime video HD is the default and that's what you get. The only time you see SD is if that's all they've got. PPV movies give you the option of HD or SD but you have to hunt to find the SD option as the default is HD.
