Why cant telecom just contract out to 2talk or wxc till they have their own platform? Surely would cost less than paying chorus to keep the copper alive?

Good point. I would think it would also cost less than losing customers LOL.  But at least Telecom has a Fibre product. Vodafone isnt even showing a product on their site yet.

Update on my situation.

I emailed Crown Fibre Holdings, advised them of Telecoms refusal to connect and asked about the possibility of a combined fibre/copper line and for their stance on the matter. They have advised me

CFH's understanding is that it is indeed possible for Chorus to install a combined fibre & copper overhead line.

Telecom and Chorus have agreed to test such a deployment technique, which is expected to be suitable for installations such as yours.

This deployment method is expected to be available from July this year. I understand Telecom intend to provide this advice to customers who may be in your position. You may wish to contact them again to reiterate your request for a connection.

googlyeggs: Telecom have cancelled my order for UFB because my phone line comes as an overhead wire from the street to the house. WTF?

I think some more details are needed here, you can certainly get UFB from an overhead wire, but its situations will vary.

how far is the span from the house to the pole,Is is just a single span or two or three hops,  Is it exclusively on your boundary?, the more details given the more help that can be offered

wellygary - it makes no difference how the copper service lead comes in and how far because at this point in time a UFB connection with telecom will not be provided when the line comes in as aerial, as chorus RMA concents require the copper aerial lead to be replaced with the fibre one and telecom does not have a voice service over fibre and is obliged to provide a phone service as part of its services

Just for clarity Installer, does the Chorus RMA compliance mean no additional wires be run or that the same number of wires be in place following the completion of the install.  Ie, Chorus can do the install as long as there remains 1 wire going to and from the house (take the copper out and put fibre in).  So a combined copper/fibre wire run would comply with the RMA?

I reckon all of the lines should be done this way, otherwise people are going to get hit by a lack of available copper lines, and be able to have a normal telephone line that works without UPS, or dependence on fibre, cabinet etc availability.

I wonder what the fallback plan is once significant amounts of copper have been removed in areas.  Will there be emergency telephones like on motorways?

Big deal-- telecom cannot even provide UFB to the entire cities of Hamilton or Tauranga yet.

This seems like a bigger issue in my view.

Overhead Iines would well exceed Hamilton and Tauranga.

Good move and should help telecom with sign ups.

And what's the point of keeping copper in all installs? Won't be anything in the street to connect in long.

Sorry but I really see this as almost funny, having to overlay copper to provide phone services and now it seems a dispensation to allow Telecom to deploy services if their is overhead copper as its the only way they can deliver UFB or should I say UFB / Copper hybrid.

Sorry if it seems as though I'm taking a cheap shot but it really concerns me when I see NZ's largest Telco struggling in the IP World and it appears no clear direction on how to deploy large scale residential services, they have had years to get ready for this.

Telecom, as of this afternoon, are accepting orders for UFB via overhead connections.

come on Telecom - why don't you just deploy voip instead of ridiculous workarounds like this?
I know you've got the voip equipment - I saw it in a tour of the central CHCH exchange in 2010 when the tech showing me around went on about how this little rack with a minimal amount of equipment in it could cover telephone connections for the entire south island, replacing all the huge exchanges scattered about the place.

Perhaps they are trembling at the thought of competing with the mighty Moore of WXC?
