Telecom have cancelled my order for UFB because my phone line comes as an overhead wire from the street to the house. WTF?

There are a number of reasons why this would happen. The most common is the overhead drop passing over another property, or a situation where overhead drops have to be replaced (ie copper pulled when fibre is installed). Since Telecom require copper to stay at present an install can't proceed.

Can you ask them to put it underground? And offer to dig the trench yourself?

Telecom cancelled it. The welcome email from them mentioned to call them if my line was an overhead line. As soon as I rang and told them it was they cancelled without any further queries. "We are unable to connect you if your line is an overhead line"

Did they cancel it after Chorus had done a site inspection?

My UFB is scheduled to be installed on Mon 7th April. I hope all goes well as I (and everyone else in the street) have overhead service for phone.

Can you dig a trench yourself to the street? Otherwise perhaps go with another ISP.

Only if they want ufb and to retain their copper cable. Not quite sure why as the fibre would follow the same path as the copper, but that is the reasoning as i understand it

This will be interesting... in Masterton they have ducted underground, but then run the fibre up the power poles for overhead delivery.

I have telecom copper (unused), telstraclear copper (unused), and tc cable (used). I wonder if Telecom would let me have UFB. Maybe they just want people to have the high margin POTS phone?

I had a very long and interesting conversation with Telecom this morning.

The guy took quite some time explaining the terms and conditions of installation. Now, I didn't mention my overhead connection but it makes plenty of sense for them to ask me if their explicit policy is not to install UFB on any dwelling where current service is by overhead line.

Frankly, I assume it'll be up to Chorus since they are the installation company.

After 1:40 in the video on this Chorus page...

...they show that overhead connection from a pole is an option.

We have struck this a few times where we have opted to keep in a copper circuit for backup scenarios, but due to pole loading constraints, and in other cases council guidelines, Chorus's only option was to remove the copper as they could only have 1 cable from the roadside to the house. - so of course we had to have the copper removed to provide the fibre service.

I think some more details are needed here, you can certainly get UFB from an overhead wire, but its situations will vary. 

how far is the span from the house to the pole,Is is just a single span or two or three hops,  Is it exclusively on your boundary?, the more details given the more help that can be offered

None of these questions were asked by the Telecom operator. The fact that it is an overhead line was enough for her to cancel my order. It is in fact a single span line which cuts across the corner of my neighbours property, but they don't know that.

I have subsequently had a "Live Chat" with a Telecom rep.....
