We're looking to put in some irrigation, and the design means we'll need to run a decent length of some 24v cable to power some solenoids.

My google-fu is failing me, as I can't find if there's a minimum depth this needs to be buried (inside conduit). I can find the rules for 240V TPS, but am drawing a blank for 24V.

Like garden lights I don't think there is a specific requirement for low voltage cabling. For example, there is no requirements to even bury the garden light cable (which runs at 24v in my case).

I would highly recommend conduit though (Even if not buried), it protects against the spade and will last a lot longer.

Typically you'd aim for 200mm like short depth fibre, but no official requirement to do so.

I think it's in section 7 of 3000, but by memory it is 'there is no depth or requirement for protection'.

This assumes it is SELV or PELV; i.e. fully isolated from the mains.

"Deeper than a cows hoof if the paddock becomes very muddy"
Or 300mm, whichever is deeper.

Always do conduit. We like using the 16mm irrigation hose from mitre 10 - its super cheap and works as a layer of protection against rodents.

The length of the blade on a garden spade should be minimum for anything. I was digging in an area full of macrocarpa roots and didn't realise that the water supply originally looped around the back of the house to a tank. I hit resistance and hit it back harder. The pvc water supply pipe was about 150mm from surface. At least with water you get immediate feedback.
