Hope someone might have some experience or recommendation.

We need to replace our old gas external cylinder (dates from the dark ages).

We looking to replace with a heat pump hot water cylinder.

Any recommendation on brands? My concern is warranty. Given the price of electric outdoor vs heat pump outdoor, we should make savings to offset the cost difference getting heat pump in 3-4 years (my paper napkin maths :D ).

So far one place has quoted Rheem Ambipower, stating their warranty process is better than Rinnai and Rinnai difficult to deal with. 7 year cylinder warranty / 3 year heat pump warranty. They really reluctant to quote Rinnai, eventually gave one that was more expensive than anyone else. Also the very firm that it will last longer than 3 years.

Through other quotes

Rinnai Hydraheat with 5 year heat pump warranty 7 year cylinder.

Carrier Blue - 10 year warranty. but can't find a lot of info about this online, which worries me.

Cost wise, depending on installer - all are very similar in price (within 1K), as each installer has a different cost for installation (as we moving it to a slightly different location).

Any thoughts or experiences?

Haier heat pump hot water monoblock models have 7 year warranty on the cylinder and 5 years on parts/labour. They are sold and supported by Fisher & Paykel in NZ.

Rheem Ambipower is a good model I have installed a few. Like the installer you had doing quotes I am also reluctant to install Rinnai products. I am a plumber and gasfitter and have issues when dealing with Rinnai as well, this has been numerous times and I only like to install from companies who give good back up support.

Look at the Apricus AiO or the Envirosun both very good value units as well. These along with the Ambipower are my most popular models that we install at my company.
If you are willing to spend more look at Reclaim or Panasonic, both have outstanding performance but are split systems.

Trade depot have some extremely competitively priced models, I personally wouldn’t use them but they are cheap.

Yeah i did like Rheem, but a bit hung up on the 3 year warranty. If pump fails just after that I could be up for some significant cost before I've had a return on investment. Really after some peace of mind as its not insignificant cost (just under 10k installed)

Good info thanks on Rinnai. I wasn't sure if that particular installer had issues with rinnai, or just gets a bigger commission on Rheem lll

Generally commend you from moving away from gas.

If you have (or are likely to get) a big solar array, a large (300-400 L) duel element conventional cylinder can be a good deal. Have the bottom element on a timer or solar diverter to heat in prime sunshine hours, and the top element on 24/7 to keep your household with hot water if the solar bit runs out. (an element can be wired to controlled power if your lines company gives a discount for that). This can also work well if you are on one of those 3 hours of free power plans (especially if you get a cylinder with 5 kW elements).

But otherwise, I understand that hot water heat pumps have come to a point where they stack up. Can't comment on particular brands.

Ever heard of the Consumer Guarantees Act? Any hot water cylinder that failed after only 3 years would clearly be covered by the CGA.

Just got a notice from Mercury informing us of a rather large increase in the fixed line charge for our gas.

Has anyone been through the process of closing a gas account? Any fishhooks or disconnection charges or just a simple close the account, turn off the gas and stop billing me?

I'm sitting on a few quotes for a Hot Water Heat Pump, currently waiting for a current one for a Haier unit (have a quote from HRV, seeing if a local plumber is more effective cost wise)

Been quoted a Rinnai Hydraheat 275L for $9665, Carrier Blue 300L for $8401 and Rinnai Enviroflo 265L for $9056

Atm if this last plumber doesn't provide a quote I am leaning towards the Carrier Blue given the 10 year warranty and it has a App.

Our goal is to remove Natural Gas so part of the plumber quote is to convert our Gas hob to LPG so all we need is a 9KG cylinder we can get refilled and without the monthly rental cost.

Our quotes are not too dissimilar.

Carrier Blue i Like warranty but stuff all info online about it, or experiences people have had.

Out of interest what did HRV quote for Haier? Im procrastinating calling them as last time I got them to quote on a home ventilation system, they hounded me for years (literally) trying to sell me one or some other services, and wouldn't leave me alone lol

Just putting it out there if any of you looking at going down the route of a Hot Water Heat Pump and are Hawkes Bay based contact me for a quote. We are very competitive with pricing and I could pretty much supply a CO2 split system for a similar price to the Hydraheat quote mentioned, a CO2 system will outperform a monobloc style heat pump and is way quieter. Like so much more quieter you have to go up to the unit to check it’s actually running
I have agreements with suppliers that will supply me direct and cut out the plumbers merchant margin.

HRV quoted $8676 at the time they had a promo for removing our califont, this is for a 250L system also

I’d stay away from any hot water heat pump with a full warranty less than 5 years. Look for the term ‘sealed system’ in the warranty terms as this refers to the refrigeration system which is the expensive part to fix.

Gree have this unit with full 7 year warranty. My workmate installed one last week.

I’ve got a Panasonic CO2 HWHP, split style, running for about 4 months. Has a 7 year warranty. So far I’m impressed and getting better savings than I expected over winter.
