A look at what the new Government plans to do about the supply of housing. As a (potential) first home buyer, is there anything good in here for me?

nope.  nothing good in there for most. its only good for land owners around cities/towns and older home owners selling up.

they are basically saying they are going to remove all controls of the housing market, no building new homes to ease demand. also looking at allowing badly built homes where builders can rip off new home owners, which will make leaky homes look like a picnic. who will build a home after that, no one.

Great...not. But then I remembered who the government is now - the same one who openly said "there is no housing crisis" until about 2017, when they realised they were going to lose the election 🙄

in all fairness they campaigned on making the housing crisis worse, they where pretty darn clear about that and they got voted in. people want it to get worse.

It’ll be much the same as what it was. A bit less density and a bit more land opened up for development but nothing particularly significant either way.

There was never going to be a significant improvement in housing affordability in the next 10 years or so, this won’t change that.

they campaigned on making it worse. there was/is never going to be any improvement. the amount of land they are now going to need is massive. even locally here the council have stopped density so that doubles or triples the land requirement straight away. as per normal the cost of the extra infrastructure gets dumped onto the housing market.

From QuickyMart's Stuff article
"Granny flat" development
The coalition plans to amend the Building Act and the Resource Consent system to allow granny flats or other small structures up to 60m² to be built with only an engineer’s report.

What is an "engineer report"? Does it mean neighbors and the council can't block a granny flat? I was thinking of building a granny flat, but I live next door to a retirement village.

I figured it would be impossible to get all my neighbor to approve.

I assume it would still have to comply with all council rules, like distance from neighboring structures (shade).

Maybe they haven't dropped enough? Aren't they still (way) higher than before the pandemic?

prices where unaffordable well before the pandemic. the RE industry bit of propaganda is to pretend that its the pandemic that's caused the high prices, just ignoring the fact the property crisis has been running for over 20 years.

Lol. Funny how you can't substantiate your point so you need to engage in a personal attack.
