$25 is really cheap, and two individual electricians have said to use a contactor - essentially a relay. I have to wonder if:

a) Your one is is rubbish (I wonder if it's been through whatever regulations a mandatory)

b) Regularly sourced stuff is incredibly overpriced

Wouldn't mind a link to the one you used, if you can find it, I'll run it past my electrician.

Being a Geekzone newbie means I am not trusted to post links, but if you search for model number KG316T-II (or is it 11, can't tell) you should find it. Post your tame sparkies comments back here please. I have the timer installed at the hot water cylinder end, right by the cutoff switch.

TonyS071: Brand new to Geekzone, and a recent Flick convert, haven't even got the first bill yet. I installed a hot water timer switch a week ago, and it's working out well according to the Flick web portal graphs.

My question is regarding Nodewatch however - is there a reference somewhere to correlate street address to the relevant node code? (Porirua/Titahi Bay in case anyone knows it off the top of their head).

Just ring up Flick and ask them to look it up in your property details, if they query you as to why, just explain it's for Nodewatch/looking up prices on Electricity Info.

What permits are required for them to be installed in an NZ house? What if it burns the place down, is that likely and would it be covered by insurance if I fit dodgy cheap electronics from overseas?

If they got it from a local importer who have typed up a SDOC and have something that looks like a test report to show on demand, then they are fine to install.

So a little update

I've successfully managed to sign upto flick. Flick and my small battery based solar system are an ideal combination.

To give you a little prospective on my household. There are 2 adults and a toddler living here, everything is electric (water and cooking included). We cook at home 6nights a week. myself and my partner shower daily while my son has a bath. Having a small child there is a lot of washing being done also, minimum of a load a day.

We have a 65" plasma and 5.1 amp running for at least 12 hours a day in the lounge 3 32" lcd TVs"s in the bedrooms all with htpc's, a i7 file server running 24/7 for all our entertainment needs including live tv.

We have 2 heat pumps which have been set to automatic and 20 degrees this summer from 8 am until 4 pm.

This weeks power bill that has just been emailed through was $3.97 and I couldn't be happier.

Don't expect that $3.97 to pay for even a days power usually. Flick is cheaper, but it's not crazy.

That is my 4th bill from them the most expensive so far was $7.33

It's looking rather enticing, especially as we've received a notice of impending price hike from Mercury (unless we sign a 2year contract to fix at the current rather high rate) and need to make a decision in the next two or three weeks.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Oh, with solar. Yeah that could be it. Mine's $50 a week in winter, $30 in summer, with two adults. Nice gain with solar :)

Maybe not quite as much as I'd hoped, but when I extrapolate to a year I'll have saved around $750. Nothing to sneeze at given the low effort required.
