I've got a couple more bulbs coming, another cool white and a warm white. I'll post up some photos and details. But it seems as if LED drop-ins are finally practical.

The Viribright's continue to work fine (almost 3 weeks), though I have noticed they flicker like crazy when the ripple control kicks in - very annoying for the maybe 20 seconds at night time...

I see Mitre 10 have a range of LED lights, anyone tried the Orbit bulbs, here's a link to one or one similar to what Mitre 10 have.

They also have the mortbay brand and Maxim as well. How do these measure up? Maxim had some data on the comparison between the old incandescent and LED bulbs converting the light output into lumens.

anything with an array of 5mn leds will be at best a decorative light

My whole house is now on ViriBright 8W bulbs. Of the 30 installed over the past 4-10 months I've had issues with 4. One lasted a day or so, one lasted a few weeks, one lasted a few months, and one had an intermittent flash. All replaced under warranty as I've kept the receipt. Recently they have changed the colour temperature without changing the packaging, the last ones I've bought are warmer but is okay as 4 are in the garage which does not need much and 1 in the wardrobe. But I do not like it when specs get changed, and with the design of these it means they have changed the specs of the phosphor silicone sheets (which converts the blue LED light into white).

Stay far away from individuel LED bulbs, it is not nearly as good as the modern ones that use blue LEDs and converts the light to white using phosphor.

PS: If you want something half decent then buy a brand name, not on TradeMe or eBay or DX etc.

Finally got some photos of our 18W Philips DN052B fittings. The distance from house to fence is about 2.5m, and the fence is 2m high. The light in the photo is representative of what it looks like, nice and bright. It is not dimmable, and it can take between 1s and 20s before it switches on depending on if you have used it recently or never. I do like the light output.

It shows how well the light spreads from these recessed fittings and how bright it is. The fittings are at Bunnings and a few other places if you want to see them. It is Philips SmartBright, comes in a fairly plain box and there are a few in the series so easy to find on the shelf.

are these recessed lights or non recessed?

can you put insulation over recessed LED lighting?

Recessed fittings with integrated power supply and permanent LEDs. No replaceable LEDs. They are not IP rated for outdoor use, but it is in a grey area of electrical rules which does not specifically require an IP rating. The LEDs are covered and as an engineer I'd be comfortable having them installed in the eves of a house and would occasionally, lightly hose them down while washing the house without much concern.
