Set it to 5 degrees and wait five minutes.

What room temperature is desplayed?

As mentioned above - what colour is the LED light, red or green?

ok you wouldn't believe it! it finally just worked with my oil heater (turned my heater on) this is try number 8. Don't know what i did differently, but it turned my heater on just now! will try again with my other fan heater and see if it works again!

Mine arrived Monday, thanks very much to polglase and benmurphy66.

I used it for the first time last night and it worked really well - see below chart (from my Owl Intuition, which I'd heartily recommend). You'll see I turned it on around 10pm, and it cycled on and off regularly until I turned it off at 6am. The spike at 2am was from the HWC. I was using a 750W radiant heater.

I found leaving set at 16 degrees worked well, the room felt a bit warmer than that to me, possibly because the heatermate was at floor level?

I would buy 3 tomorrow if they had an external probe or remote sensor. The problem is that all but one of my usable sockets in the bedrooms are either behind furniture or curtains and so would not be able to record an accurate temperature (no airflow). I may ask them again if they are planning a remote version.

Procrastination eventually pays off.

Yeah an external probe would be excellent. I have mine on a multi box to get it out from behind the bedside unit.

I used it again last night, but this time with the heater set to 2kw. Again it worked well, although this time the energy usage looked quite different, with shorter more intense bursts. The red lines on the picture below show the heater turning on and off throughout the last two nights. I can't really compare if either is more energy efficient as last night was not as cold as the night before. I can't see any reason why there should be a difference though. I just thought it was interesting to show how well the heatermate works.

I also checked the temperature reading against a digital thermometer I have. When I placed the thermometer beside the heatermate they were within 0.4 degrees. Interestingly the temperature at bed level was around 1 degree warmer than at ground level.

Thanks for posting that, it is interesting. It doesn't actually show if the Heatermate works well or not, you would need to log the room temperature and see how much it varies below and above the set temperature. I'd be particularly interested to see it with a large oil fin or something else with large thermal mass.

The Heatermate whitepaper talks about it 'adjusting' for different heater types, but I suspect that is BS.

Skolink, you're quite right that it doesn't show how it performs with regards to temperature stability throughout the night, but it does show it turning off and on regularly, and indicates the saving I'm getting compared with leaving the heater on all night, which was my previous situation.

I had been looking at temperature loggers to try and measure the actual performance, but then I remembered the reason I got this was to save money.

It would be interesting to see if an oil heater behaved any differently. My thinking is that the thermal mass means it would take longer to cool down and trigger the heatermate to turn on, but then it would also take longer to heat the oil and get the room back up to temp. At the end of the day energy in = energy out, right?
