EK or whoever they were purchasing hedge cover from, would have lost a lot of money due to these high prices. EK also might only be buying hedging for peak prices. In which case they would have lost out big time.

And hedging is like insurance and or gambling. Sometimes you win. But on average you loose and the seller wins. If these high prices become a regular thing, hedge prices will rise to compensate. And other power companies like EK would be forced to increase their prices.

Sure the higher prices are annoying, but it just means that instead of saving money. I'm breaking even. Also the warmer weather means no heating, and my solar system is providing 100% of my hot water. Therefore a massive reduction in my off peak power usage. So fixed fees and peak usage now makes up a larger % of my bill. Overall $ amount is still cheaper though.

Over Christmas and New Year's, power will be stupidly cheap with Flick. As industrial and some commercial demand shuts down for the holidays. Combined with lots of "must run" generation remaining in operation. Means really cheap wholesale prices.

I'm in Wellington, anyone else get more and more notifications about high prices lately? If dry lakes and low water levels are going to push prices up it might be time to give up on the dream and just go to EK.

There has been next to no wind generation over the last few weeks. Today, wind accounts for just 1 MW so that means the old but super reliable Huntly Rankine units have to be brought online. It's a dirty job but someone has to do do it and thankfully, we still have them available.

A new email invoice design from flick. Now without consumed kWh. Wondering if it was designed long ago like that or was removed so that it was not possible to calculate the $/kWh price easily.

Prices still pretty high here in Christchurch. Is the primary driver for this low rainfall and lake levels, or are there transient maintenance or downtime events that are still affecting the spot price? I know there was some planned maintenance mentioned a few posts up but I think this has now passed.

All of the above, plus some unplanned plant outages. TCC (Contact gas powerstation in Taranaki) is still on maintenance till the 15th and then there were some issues with the Geothermal stations Contact runs around Taupo in the last few days. This along with the extreme dry conditions in the SI means high prices. This week both of the Huntly Rankine units have been running plus the other gas turbine they have there. Pretty extraordinary for this time of year. There will be the typical lull in prices over christmas (although this year I could see steady $50-60 prices) and then it will be back to over $100 in January unless there is some decent rain, which at this stage is looking very unlikely.

Flicks idea is a good one, but many can't be bothered with micro managing usage on a continual basis. We had a winter spike period, now a summer spike period. I will stay on EK.

I don’t bother with micro managing usage, but the large variability in prices (and bills) is a bit of a pain. I realise it’s what you sign up for though. At least I’m able to go to EK if I want now (during the winter spike my property was blocked on the EK website as I was a Flick customer).
