There's pretty much no hope of unmetered access when early indications are it'll be through Akamai CDN

Benoire: I can only hope the protocol is similar to netflix/hulu or they create open source plugins as quite frankly I'm disappointed that there is no mention of media centre users. Secondly, 3Mbps isvery poor, the 1080i stream from Sky is higher than that at around 8-10mbps!

Yes but how many people can realistically stream 8-10mbps?

With the right encoding 3mbps streams can look pretty good, particularly if your watching on a TV.

As for the media centre issue, not enough people have a media centre set up, and I doubt they will ever become popular enough to justify the investment in creating apps etc for them.

Who else thinks they have given TVNZ 1 game a week as only a PR exercise?

I bet they have done it so that anyone complains to Peter Scudmore at the English FA about only being online he can point at TVNZ as being terrestrial platform.

The more that gets mentioned, the less I want to get this.

There will be something I can do through XBMC I'm sure that will give me a great stream.

thats quite low , i watch NFL gamepass at 4.5mbits/s with no lag, so it can be done.

Akami do the NFL streaming which is very nice so this is promising for the EPL fans.

There was probably a part of the rights agreement that said there had to be a certain amount of terrestrial coverage.

Not intending to offend anyone but lets face it they are not going to show the 'top drawer' games on TV 1 are they? They are going to be the likes of Cardiff City, Hull City, Manchester City.......

Haha. There's a good chance they might seeing as they are going to be shown delayed (Midday Sunday) and there is only going to be one game shown on TV in NZ. Also, TVNZ are marketing it as "Match of the Week" so I imagine there would be a few pissed off people if it was lower ranked teams every week.

haha.

with it being on sunday, they limit what games they'll be able to show as most of the big games are played on sky sports in england on sundays or Monday night football. but with the new BT deal I think BT get to pick some big games and I think their games will be played on saturdays at 5. So there could be potential for some big games.
I suppose they'll just pick the game that was most entertaining?

Why only one game a week when they have Saturday/Sunday morning, Monday morning and then some Tuesday morning matches later in the season during cup comps. Seems like they could be doing more than one a week.

DVB-S/S2 can stream upwards of 10mbps. This is the problem in my view... The market is very much setup for STB/TV NOT AppleTV / PC / TV. I would imagine the number of geeks with devices to view this would be high, but the number of overall sports fans low. I know my boss, for example, does not have any devices capable of watching this apart from his PC... and how many people really know how to stream to the TV.

i just had a question. yes sky wont be showing epl...can they at least show all the FA cup and Carling Cup matches.. at least that would be something if EPL is not being shown.

I agree with you, some purists would argue that even Sky's 8-10Mbps channels do not do HD justice. The Apple Tv/Mobile/PC market however is a growing market and likely to be a more prominent form of entertainment in the near future. A good example of this is the uptake of Netflix in the US, it shows that if a service is easy to use and works well, people will change to their habits to use these services.
