Anyone using Cheap Charts to check for bargains, should also check iTunes or the Apple TV app. Some of the pricing and upgrade information differs from what we have on the NZ Apple Store.

Blu-ray Discs vs Apple Store Movies 🤔

Its about six months since I bought my last 4K Ultra HD disc. I've tried to wean myself off them before, but to no avail. I've been collecting since DVD became a thing, and many of my favourite films I bought on all three formats (DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD). I still have a bookcase in my Man Cave, full of mainly Blu-ray and 4k Ultra HD. I have about 60 DVD SteelBooks which I can't bring myself to give away after all the money that I spent on them. I don't regret spending my hard earned dollars on my physical media collection, but the prices, like vinyl, have gone through the roof at JB Hi-Fi NZ, and, if you can be bothered, its usually cheaper to import from Australia, the UK or the US (Amazon is your friend here).

I have now made the permanent switch to digital streaming. Yes, I think I have finally broken the habit of the last twenty odd years, and I am not going to listen to the reasons given for not going to streaming, 'cos I've heard them all before. After all, I was one of those detractors myself not so long ago. 😁

I love the convenience of having a library of digital films, and the option of buying many of my favourite catalogue movies for less than five dollars. Even the new titles don't take long to have flash sales below $10. Added to that is the fact that those five dollar titles will possibly get upgraded to 4K UHD and/or Dolby Atmos audio at no extra charge, which beats re-purchasing to get the 4K upgrade on disc.

Disney pulled out of the Australasian physical media market last year, but all of there new releases are available in the Apple Store. Don't forget that Disney owns the Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and Fox titles which are always available with Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos/Dolby Digital 7.1/Dolby Digital 5.1 and an extras package. New Disney releases are usually $24.99 or $19.99, but you can get an even better deal if you wait for the occasional price drop, which is usually $10 less than the release price.

Supporters of physical media state that streaming doesn't come close to the quality of disc based media, but I have to disagree with that statement. While technically a 4K disc will be better quality, I really can't see the difference on my 65" OLED TV. Audio is definitely better on disc, but not enough to make me pay the ridiculous prices asked. Streaming has finally won me over, and Apple's streaming quality just keeps getting better. I am totally converted. No more flattened SteelBooks, scratched discs or possible disc rot for me.

As I have stated before, an Apple TV 4K media player is a must for serious streamers. Casual streamers will be happy with the Apple TV app which is available on most Smart TV's on the market. Rumours are circulating of a new Apple TV 4K media player hitting the market in 2025. Not much is known about it yet, but its expected to have a price reduction over the last models.

Hopefully I can offer an informative and useful thread going forward

I am still buying discs, although have slowed this down a great deal now. The price point difference between the discs and online version is only going to make it even easier to focus more on the online streaming, Gladiator II only $10 when it is over $50 in store is a crazy difference. I would like to be able to pick up tv series on Apple TV but they don’t seem to be in a hurry on permitting that in NZ.

It would be great to get TV Series such as The Penguin on 4K streaming from the Apple Store. Its okay if you have SKY and can watch series like The Penguin on their HBO channel, but, although I do have SKY, I don't have SKY Entertainment which you need to watch HBO programs. Having said that, we still only get HBO programs in 1080p (or is it 1080i), that is the reason that I haven't "upgraded" my SKY Box to the new white one. I can have all of the apps on my Apple TV 4K with no ads.

As I've said before, "its time Apple made their service a level playing field" and present their premium US service to the rest of the world.

Speaking of TV Series, I just came across Empire Magazine's Top 100 TV shows of all time.

My favourite... Breaking Bad (2008 - 2013) was second to The Sopranos (1999 - 2007). I have to admit that I have not seen any of The Sopranos episodes.

Browsing through the list brought back so many memories of excellent bygone entertainment. Come on Apple, up your game!

I recently topped up my Apple Store wallet with regards to purchasing Gladiator II, which is, indeed a bargain at its present price of $9.99. To my amazement, the audio was only Dolby Digital 5.1 compared to the US Store which has Dolby Atmos audio. Its possible that Atmos will be added, but the film has been available to stream for a while now, and should have had the upgrade.

We can't blame Apple for this, as its just the studio (Paramount) being lazy. Some of the studios need a kick in the pants, as many titles in our store are missing Atmos or 4K, which the US Store has.

With the release of the Apple TV 4K 3rd Generation in 2022; Apple introduced 4K HDR10+ as an option. I checked several films at the time, and some, but not all had been upgraded.

Today I decided to check again, and all of the films in my library that were originally bog standard 4K HDR10, happily, have the + added to them. My Panasonic TV has the ability to show HDR10+ content, but my AV receiver can't pass it through. I could connect directly to the TV, which would display HDR10+, but It doesn't have eARC support, so I would not get Dolby Atmos through my receiver. I'll just have to be happy with HDR10... for now 😜

Samsung owners will get the benefit as well. It's well known that Samsung will not support Dolby Vision on their TV's, but they do support HDR10+.

Sorry for all of the posts today, but its raining in Christchurch and I'm bored 😁

At some stage you’d think they would come out with a gladiator 1 and 2 bundle (and make gladiator 4k).
