rp1790: Well, after a couple of days at home watching a TV series back to back, and odd movies with Plex I have to say it's not currently usable. Has major issues with MKV files, some play and then stop part way through, some don't play at all. Continually stops playing with a popup message saying "Can't play video".

Hopefully the Plex dev team will put out a fix shortly. For now will have to revert back to my MacMini for reliable Plex playback.

thanks for the info, thats really surprising considering the plex google tv client plays back everything i throw at it (well the co-star vizio does, the netgear neo doesnt support all the same codecs).

freitasm: That would still be ok for me - only really getting it for Netflix and Amazon Instant Video, as everything else is played through our HTPC. The only reason getting the Fire TV is so that we don't have to jump to a browser to watch Netflix...

Yeah, actually I wouldn't be that upset if I have to put my MacMini back. The Amzonn video and netflix interfaces are top knotch.

Voice search works pretty well, also search's over Hulu Plus, but not Plex.

Youv'e looked into xbmc? Theres a couple of special builds for it (namely the ouya xbmc build) that plays 1080p's without issue (upto 30Mbs atm), DTS and DD passthrough work fine via hdmi/optical. You can create a samba share from xbmc to your content and play over the network, no transcoding etc required as xbmc has all the codecs.

I am quite keen on one to run plex on my TV, the smart menu on the LG is pretty slow :( There is a guy in Wellywood selling them for $185 on tardme.

According to nzpost tracking mine arrived in NZ at 10am, im not sure if there is another scan once it clears customs or not. Im hoping for a delivery tomorrow as well which maybe optimistic, for the cheapest shipping option from shipito they have exceeded my expectations so far (20-40 day delivery guideline but it has only been a week since it left the shipito warehouse)

Opinion on the Netflix Interface vs a Roku?

My Roku 2 is started to make me angry with slowness - deciding on a Roku 3 or Amazon Fire.

Wouldn't it also depend if you were heavily invested In each Eco system? Ie amazon instant or m-go or vudu (which may be in both)

the Amazon interface is significantly faster than Roku. But personally I don't find this annoyance. I prefer the Roku remote control. Amazon voice control is cool but isn't a deciding factor for me. They are both good choices, but Fire is significantly faster (2GB of RAM AFAIK)

I have a question to help decide if this is what I need.
I have a server running plex server to feed my 2013 LG smart TV, this model doesn't have a plex client app, just a DLNA client and I find it rather slow at browsing my libraries (I purchased the 2013 model over the 2014 model because they downgraded the CPU in the 2014 model to try and avoid this issue).
Over on the Plex forums a user has written a plex client that I can run from USB, he has submitted it to LG to try and get it as an official app, the interface is much nicer (not just browsing folders) but lags heavily scrolling through the menus of media (worse because running from USB maybe?)

How smooth and responsive is the plex client IRL?

Are you talking about on the Fire, or on a TV?

Not sure about the Fire - hopefully the few people on here that are receiving them can test them out - but Plex Client on a Samsung TV is pretty snappy.

I like the speed and UI layout of this however it is getting packed away and maybe brought out again later or sold.

I am not yet using Netflix and mainly stream my ripped movies.

I put xbmc and spmc on this. XBMC just crashes but SPMC works well. The problem is the picture quality is rubbish. Not a smooth picture and there is jerkiness. I wouldnt say juddering as it isnt. It is definitley watchable. The picture though is grainy and no where near the quality of my htpc running windows 8.1 and xbmc.

I am not sure if Plex will be better.

The reason I am not selling yet is these are early days and the apps MAY improve. But for me I will stay with the htpc for a bit longer.

I was looking at using this and dishtv freeview box and getting rid of the htpc to be more energy efficient. 4 watts vs 60 watts should be worthwhile long term.
