I can't seem to find any info on the Chromecast around whether it supports 60fps. I see some articles suggesting that the Chromecast 1 only supported 30fps for 1080p, did that change with the Chromecast 2? Do you need a Chromecast Ultra for 1080p60

Chromecast 1 & 2 models do not support past 30FPS, they suffer quite heavily actually.

Ontop of this there are a few other devices affected that I'm not sure i can communicate at this stage.

Are you sure? I used a Chromecast Ultra (which I dont need but bought to test SS) it was great when F1 started.

And, I assumed client apps would support adaptive playback, ie, the client chooses the stream according to hardware and network capabilities. And that can even change on the fly , if the bandwidth reduces for whatever reason.

It seems a bit primitive to stream to the lowest common denominator

For normal TV, i.e. dramas, movies etc. 25/30 is fine as there is little motion that rqeuires fast panning. For sports they have generally been 'recorded' at 50 or 60 fps, even when at low resolutions... The reduced framerate leads to issues with fast movement as the screen cannot update quick enough for the change in movement and it really confuses the eyes.

They've never had adapative framerate, just resolution.

I agree, when there is no panning racing or panning tennis balls, it's fine. Sharp, it's great. But I prefer my F1 cars to drive and my tennis balls to fly

in my testing my CC 2nd gen would do 720p@60 and 1080p@30 so it does do 60Hz just not at full HD.

Speaking out of my own mind here.. But i'd suspect these issues were not clear at the start. More than likely they came out of actual experience with this older hardware requiring a change to be made.

As noted earlier, it's not just the Chromecast Gen1/2's.

What you don't know, You can't plan for.

This is the sort of thing i deal with on my Day to Day... Sometimes it just takes having that right person in the conversation who goes "hey have you looked at this" to realize, Things need to Pivot.

Perhaps not, but Batman is basically saying "offers both and let either a) the app decide which to use or b) let users go for the high one if they want.

The problem with this approach though is John Doe doesn't understand 720 x 1080, 30 fps vs 60 fps. If their under-powered device start failing during a game while trying to play the 60 fps stream, they will blame Spark Sport. And if a user with a current, modern device watches something on 30 fps they will blame Spark Sport.

Now imagine users with those crappy Android TV devices sold a few months back with pirated streaming pre-installed, then try to install a downloaded APK and complain their under-powered, unsupported devices have problems...

Basically doomed if you do, doomed if you don't.

On a personal basis i agree, and have voiced my personal opinions about this quite strongly.

Spark Sport folk have made the decision for a reasonable reason, that i wont go into on here for the benefit of John Doe.

It can only fix a couple of moving items at a time. Panning shots with the ball moving a different way make about 8 of them appear lightly around where it actually is.

My TV has no such function, and I'd imagine there will be a lot of people that either do not know if their TV has that or have a TV that doesn't. My TV is about 6 years old now, so not archaic by any stretch and I have no need to replace it as its a good old 1080p plasma.

Dumb question.

Thing in my hand has about 10% more grunt than my old i5. 30%? more resolution than the moving picture device on the wall.

And I see most talking about cast/3rd party external device noticing the diff.. how's it look on the tiny screen in the current state of change now. Better suited despite tiny or just as bad as a blown up version?

I thought the same thing until I tried it with a Sony VW270-ES going from disabled to Motionflow low or Motionflow high. It made a large difference in completely restoring the buttery smooth 60FPS feel.

I completely accept that the thought might be a workaround doesn't fit the negative narrative - and I apologise for that.

Of course, this is my personal experience, believe it or not, but I am telling you it made a very noticeable difference in my case.
