Paul1977:

I think that's a bit of a stretch. It's not really password sharing if you're in the same household. When Netflix tweet "Love is sharing a password" most people would take it at face value, that Netflix is more than happy for you to share your password.

ah, you beat me to it. they equated it to love. i hope, for most people, that their love is not limited to the boundaries of their physical dwelling. i certainly love far more people than those living with me. and i sure hope more people than those living with me love me.

i guess @Paul1977 are the same. with my family, that live in my 'household'. i definitely don't consider it sharing. in fact, none of them know my netflix password. i personally logged on to netflix (as well as d+ and prime) on a television, a chromecast with google tv connected to another televetion, an xbox series x connected to our main television, 4 laptops, 3 smartphones, a chromebook, an android tablet and linked 3 nest hubs. at most, we use 2 streams simultaneously with my wife & i on the big screen, and my daughter on whichever device she's on in her bedroom.

in just the same way that everybody is entitled to any food they find on the table or in the pantry.

How does that work when "everybody" is in another suburb, another town, another island?

The Netflix household issue means that yes, anybody in the household can raid the pantry and table, viewing wise.

I see what you are saying, but there is a difference. You didn't buy your Netflix subscription. You rent it monthly.

i did initially consider using a lease model. but thought that i really am buying the right to 4 simultaneous streams each month. see, when you lease or rent something, you return the item after the agreed period. i do not return the right to stream, i consume it each month.  i can also choose not to buy it again for the next month.

Agree

You are buying it. For you, your significant other, your kids, which is your household. You can choose not to buy it again, so cancel. A poster here said he/she will buy and binge then cancel, thats fine. April, do it again, also fine. Whats not fine is you allow freeloaders. I allow freeloaders, as I can. Now I cant, so i wont. Its not my product, its a product i purchase, nothing more

When you rent month to month, the agreement for the current terms are valid for 30 days. That means either party can change the terms with 30 days notice. You can give 30 days cancellation notice, they can change how the product is offered.

I am not convincing you to stay, I literally don't care either way who or who doesn't consume Netflix. If it's no longer value for *you*, spend your money elsewhere.

Having said that, countless times when price increase threads get started, people threaten to leave, boycott the service, obligatory gnashing of teeth over corporate greed the usual nonsense, but when it boils down to it, it's all very short lived for most people and they carry on as usual.

What's kind of gross though is the people who are acting like it's justification to steal that content instead as if they are entitled to it.

Nope. It’s reality.

No, it's stealing.

Stealing isn't my reality.

Don't try and hide from it, justify it, or try and weasel out of it.

Given you live in a parallel dimension to the rest of the thread that’s understandable.

Netflix did nothing about about password sharing for 16 years. Now they are. That is a change.

I'd suggest the pandemic saw an exponential increase in the number of people who shared passwords with people they barely liked, barely knew and definitely didn't 'love'.

There is a point where the number of people abusing what was clearly intended to be limited to a household or at least close immediate family members, becomes so huge, that investing the money into a system to prevent it is required and also probably financially beneficial.

You argue the 100 Million number, but what percentage of your clients do you allow to consume your company resources for nothing?

i got an email and it wants to confirm my location as near Otara Auckland, which i presume is Sky HQ. So since i am in Rotorua do i say yes and will it cause problems later.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Actually, only those who think it's OK to steal. It won't bother me 1 iota if I am the only one.

Not deep into the detail here, but an external IP can be generated anywhere, dependent on the RSP internal network. Hence why I assume they rely on wifi??

@cbrpilot?

does this mean anyone on Sky Broadband will have the same location and how will that stop people sharing passwords if both people are with Sky. or if i confirm and in a month or so my location switches does Netflix shut my account down as some one who is password sharing.

From a link I posted on page 8,

We use the IP address from the Netflix device or app to assume its general location (such as city, state/province, and postal code). For example, your primary location may be displayed as “near city, state/province.”

Also has they are referring to wired when mention wifi, so they are not relying on wifi.

As for which city, when I use the likes of whatsmyip  I’ve seen different cities show up, though it has the correct one at moment.

I cant speak for Sky BB but where do they serve the IP's from inside their network or whoever they are partnered with? Not every town big or small Id assume. Thats why I felt wifi was the deal with Netflix as I "think" that can be triangulated. Hopefully Dave can elaborate
