Lurch: Theres Quickflix, which isn't badly priced. Although unlike Hulu and Netflix no one month free trial and the amount of movies/TV for streaming is limited. Plus I refuse to pay a $5 activation fee or whatever it is for the first month.

That's because in a month you'd probably have watched everything!

I'm not saying which ISP I'm with in case the NSA/GCSB//Telecom/Vodafone/Rupert Murdoch shut our Netflix down too ;)

Good point. If it is Telecom and Vodafone doing it, and others aren't, I will change ISP. I hope it is just some change they made laste last week, and they realize it doesn't do what they wanted and put it back. Saw someone saying BigPipe weren't affected. Could be an option (though, they are owned by Telecom).

NetFlix US still works using a VPN.  At the moment I'm plugging the laptop into the TV instead of the Roku when I want the US version.  I'm going to have a test to see if I can get the dd-wrt pptp VPN up through my new Asus router.

I refuse to buy a new tv just to access it, considering I already have apple tvs and a roku 3.

Be interested if anyone knows how to change from US Netflix to British Netflix on Apple TV and whether or not it's working for them. Same for whether or not it's confirmed that other ISPs are working as I'll change providers immediately.

I looked at quickflix the other day as I'd love to pay for content and pay someone NZ based- but there's not enough content. I'd also pay up to 40 kiwi a month for mine- I'm paying for a static ip, DNS and Netflix sub anyway.... Silly jealous ISPs. I think they have made the wrong call here.

Depends how you're accessing netflix.  With unblock us, you can change netflix region on their site, or via ios app.  I've set my to UK now and I can watch the UK catalog with no issues.  It is a smaller catalog though.

Bigpipe is a subsidiary of Telecom no? Strange that they would not be affected.

suthland: On Telecom 500Gb UFB plan was using unlocator DNS.
Just signed up for Playmo 7 day trial and have same problem on iPad Air, can access NF and look at content but when I try and stream get "Error  Cannot play movie. Please try again later"

So Playmo not a solution for me!

You're using 213.5.182.117 for DNS? This is working for me, although I'm Vodafone.

No that was not one of the choices I was given, but have just tried it and still get same result
"Error  Cannot play movie. Please try again later" so appears its more than the DNS server

Hi all,

Just a quick update about the situation:

1. After some investigation, there appears to be some issue when user invokes the actual streaming from Netflix through CDN.
2. It is not an individual IP block as user with Dynamic IP also suffers the same problem.
3. It is definitely a NZ-only issue.
4. It is not a catch-all problems that affect every single NZ users. There are users who are able to initiate the streaming from their 4G network and switch back to WIFi after the movie begins to stream.
5. Our NZ servers and VPNs are able to stream without any issue.
6. We were able to get stream working if we also intercept the Netflix streaming CDN.
7. At this point, we don't want to jump into the conclusion whether this is an act by Netflix or NZ ISPs until we have more concrete evidence.

While we continue our investigation, if you have an UnoTelly account, please send an e-mail to support@unotelly.com . You will be able to receive a 30-day UnoVPN free of charge during this period.

When you go to the netflix site for the first time the playmo logon comes up first, is that happening?

See, thats that old business model that they can't seem to let go of. Its also one that is driving consumers to piracy instead of paying for their content because there is no legitimate way to do so, especially in regards to TV.

You're not wrong but at this moment in time it works out better for them economically.

can't speak for others, but I personally find NetFlix far more attractive for TV content. Do the same arguments you make apply to that medium. This is a serious question, not a snide rebuttal.

I can't be 100% sure since I don't have/never had any involvement with the TV contents rights holders but on the face of it a lot of those arguments would also apply.

By and large I agree with your sentiments. The only caveat I will add is that I wouldn't go around too easily characterising the likes of Netflix as the good guys and the IP holders as out of date evils. Netflix as it stands does create a lot of issues for other people and I am not without sympathy for some of the US ISPs' arguments (especially those made by genuine ISPs -- ones who don't have cable and other footholds to protect) that it's freeloading through the huge amount of network resources that it's devouring. It would frankly be far better for the long term survivability of everybody concerned for these "all you can eat" type streaming providers like NF and Spotify to increase their prices, better their infrastructure (a lot of people in the US complain about it being close to unusable during their peak times), and work more constructively with IP holders, instead of just chasing subscriber growth.

No, I open the app, it asks who is watching, I click on my login and Netflix opens. App who normally until I try and play a movie.
This is on a iPad are you on Desktop?

Hi everyone, John from Getflix here...

We've come to a similar conclusion as Unblock Us.. there seems to be some ISP specific shaping/blocking going on when accessing certain CDNs/servers. This is all a working theory at this time, we're just putting our ideas/findings out there...

This shaping/blocking appears to be targeted at specific CDNs, in particular, Netflix Open Connect servers (possibly using the Open Connect ASN). Netflix in other regions uses other CDNs (Akamai, etc) which may explain why these are not affected.

There are still far more questions than answers... like why only some ISPs and why all at once? Do they share some international peering arrangements?

We've also believe that users on Orcon are not affected. Can anyone else verify this? Here's an interesting post on Orcon's blog that is well, interesting... http://www.orcon.net.nz/ufb/blog/how_to_watch_us_netflix_here_in_nz - they seem to be promoting Netflix streaming!

In terms of the reports that one of Playmo's DNS is OK... that DNS server is based in London and uses Google's DNS as an upstream. This is similar to our Ireland and London DNS servers... can anyone that's affected try to access US Netflix using only our London or Ireland DNS servers?

Thanks for all the info, both via our support desk and this thread... we'll post more info as it comes to hand.

/John

Great service and offer there.

If this is a permanent issue, is there a way of upgrading a UnoTelly DNS only account to one with VPN also?

Hi Trig42,

Our goal is to restore DNS access to NZ users. We will do everything we could to maintain access to our users so that is something we will do 100% no question asked.

Thanks for the update and your ongoing efforts. If the results of the preliminary work holds up, it looks like you guys have a chance of being able to get around this. Fingers crossed :)
