Considering we're using SVOD to replace Sky (which we just cancelled this week), I've got a fair bit of wriggle room in price. If this global Netflix would negate the need for other SVOD services by securing content available on Hulu (next day availability of US network shows) and HBO (which I doubt will happen), I'd probably be OK with as high as $40 per month.

But in a more likely scenario, if Netflix was simply to allow their current catalog to be consistent across all regions, I'd probably not want to go any higher than $20.

I think we all agree it could happen but I doubt content owners will not be prepared to take a cut in revenue so would become a lot more costly for NF which would have to be passed onto the consumer one way or another

The argument regarding people in the US shouldn't have to pay a premium is irrelevant as there is plenty of content available in other regions that is not available in US so they stand to gain as well

I consider that if i could move the cost of Unotelly across to NF as a premium it would be status quo cost-wise, but would a 30% increase in cost be acceptable to the masses or more importantly cover the global cost for content? I'm guessing probably not

Not for Netflix. Not unless you paid for Netflix US and Netflix NZ so as to contibute to rights costs. The Unotelly cost is artificial, thats to allow you to pay for a NZ library and get a free other, larger library. If we can get Netflix US here, at $19-95 that sounds more than ok to me. $24-95 is a stretch, but maybe

Netflix and Hulu etc might share some content, but I'm sure they have their own exclusives. If NF was 20, two others were 15 each thats 50. Not bad for what could be an overall coverage

I'd pay NZD$20 month happily for ALL content (not US content), maybe $25 a month depending on quantity/quality. I basically just use netflix and hulu, so would still use a dns4me/unblockus service for hulu.

The new crackdown thread (technical only) covers solutions and an interesting read.

We've thrashed out the pros and cons, and solutions for the industry. The rationale is to stop gepblock bypassing. Say it works, life goes on. But this action may cause some positive reactions. Netflix says it wants globalisation, which I take as all Netflix content is available in all countries it provides to. That may get a hurry up, as a consequence of the crackdown is geoblock users migrate to Hulu and other offerings that are not cracking down. So, if Netflix was widely successful at cracking down, they will also be widely successful in reducing their subscriber count.

SVOD made piracy unnecessary. Globalising Netflix's library would resolve the geoblock issue. If the Netflix NZ price doubled, and its library grew a lot, and its too hard to fix a broken geounblocker, or too fiddly, or too often, this issue might self resolve if Netflix take the library change instead of the technical change. OTOH it might be that current crackdowns 100% solve the problem for 95% of the bypasses, so they leave the geek 5% to fiddle away? I have no idea on the number of bypassers and how prevalent that might be outside of Aust/NZ.

Thats does make sense Rikki. We are known to be tech smart, early adopters. I'd love to know what other countries are geoblock bypass heavy. Particularly Europe, or are their Netflix libraries pretty good?

That wouldn't be surprising indeed, it seems that many of the posts on the Getflix and Unotelly Facebook pages with the "you are using an unblocker/proxy" message were from people living in Australia.
