freitasm: I don't know which model they sent yet... Let's see this evening.

I suspect he was enquiring over the price - lol

We run Netflix on a 55" Samsung and also on a 26" Panasonic. Even though we are rural and have a very poor <2Mb/s download speed; the picture quality is excellent (c8

Why, oh why, oh why, won't this work )c8

So I've been playing around this weekend and rooted the Fire TV and installed XBMC for Fire TV as the launcher. It is very nice and gives still gives me access to Netflix etc. I'm going to lend it to my Mum to see if she can use it as a standalone solution with a NAS. If so I'll be ordering a new one for me  smile

has anyone tried using a different remote control these.  Either my remote has packed up or the FireTV is faulty as remote wont work.  I can use it with standard usb keyboard fine but sort of defeats the purpose.  I see I can order a new remote from Amazon

Amazon would replace it under warranty, but you would need to ship it to a place like YouShop and pay the $22 freight.

How many remotes can the fire tv be paired with at once? I keep leaving mine in the other room or losing it.

I think the new Google TV basically killed this product for me, better hardware with the Tegra K1 and I expect gaming elements to be superior. If you were buying now, any reason you guys might select the Fire TV? Amazon ecosystem has zero value for me, and cost not an issue either, so I guess any reasons beyond those.

Im already paying for prime anyway to get free shipping to the reshipper so the content is basically free to me, it works well and I am considering getting addidional units for the other TVs because it is still quite cheap for what it does,

Will wait and see what comes from google tho,

Still want to know why I cant have it, the chromecast, a PS3 and a PS4 on the TV and have HDMI CEC work on all of them. Get the usual unsupported crap answer from samsung...

Yeah, if you're already in their content ecosystem the Fire TV is absolutely exceptional. I think even if you're not it's a great device, but probably won't eclipse the Google offering when it arrives if the Amazon content is not a drawcard.

Assuming Google TV will be locked down as Google Chromecast... Just the ability to use a user-defined DNS out of the box makes the Amazon Fire TV a much more compelling experience for users.

Just need to setup a NAT rule on your router to redirect any DNS queries going to 8.8.8.8 to your DNS service. Agree not as easy, but takes care of Google ;)

Having said that I have an Amazon fire Tv en route

I have all that stuff set up in the router, no issues there.

You guys are funny. NZtechfreak said "If you were buying now, any reason you guys might select the Fire TV?" and I give a reason. Sure YOU have this setup on router. YOU know how to root a device. How many of the other estimated 30,000 people in New Zealand using Netflix would know how to do it?

Yes, you can use Chromecast to play your YouTube cat videos. If that's all the content you want. But I bet it's not.

My point is that side-by-side, Fire TV is more "consumer friendly" in terms of plug and play some content.

I saw that amazon is supposed to be releasing some 'tools' for android/smartphones that would enable remote control via your phone. I guess it would use bluetooth as the fire tv uses bluetooth for the remote. Cant recall where I saw that or a launch date...

That's quite right. Jo Public is not a software engineer and anything more than shoot and click would be a game set and match fail. It's the usability that makes the Amazon Fire TV a great choice (c8
