is apple TV the best media centre or will an xbox one provide all these streaming services?

its a shame the sony smart TV is so weak sauce. Cant even get high def on QF or on windows 8 for that matter.

Knew we should have gone for the $400 warehouse Veon.

Based on existing NZ streaming services, the best device to hedge your bets would be a Samsung smart tv. Afaik all NZ streaming services have an app for that.

I have an Xbox One and watch all my streaming thru that

Hulu
Netflix
BBC iPlayer
Australia sbs
Al Jazeera
Amazon
Etc

You'll find telecom and Vodafone MBB offerings are still pretty competitive now compared to overseas, which is a surprise given our small population and crazy geography

These companies need to make money

Really interested in Amazon prime though.

If you think lightbox is light on content, you'll probably be disappointed by netflix. I'd be quite surprised if the Netflix lineup was materially better than lightbox, simply because of how much they will be charging relative to how much they will need to spend.
See my previous post - lighbox budget was $20,m for the lineup you see.
If Netflix, as predicted, charge $10 per month, they wil need to be predicting a vast amount of customers to recover a budget much more than $20m per year.

Netflix will have movies, but that of course means the TV content will suffer. Personally, I prefer TV stuff. I've found very little in the way of movies on Netflix USA that I watch (and 100% guarantee you that NZ netflix movies lineup will be orders of magnitude worse than usa)
. Everything I watch is TV. (And the same for my kids)

I'm crazy as I also have a Chromecast, FireTV, Firebox, Roku3, Apple TV, 3 different Miracast adapters, and a couple of PCs hooked up to my TV (yes multiple HDMI inputs and an HDMI splitter) but I find myself just defaulting to use my Xbox One now.

Of course if you're going to bugger around with VPN or DNS redirection nothing stopping you using Netflix US instead of the forthcoming NZ service

we have very little interest in TV, especially US TV. bbc on the other hand is of interest.

quick flix doesnt seem bad, its not super, but its got some movies. new releases we hire on blu ray for $4 from the local shop.

US TV is going to be on Netflix NZ. I think you'll find US version will be "better" than NZ. But if you hate breaking Ts & Cs then its not for you

Yes BBC iPlayer is great I love it. But its geoblocked.

I honestly can't imagine the New Zealand Netflix being any good for the first 6 months or so. It is going to take quite a bit of time to get all the programming rights sorted out. Even at that point I'll be sticking with my unoDNS/VPN because I enjoy having access to not only the American Netflix but also the British and Dutch (The Dutch Netflix is actually quite good) services as well.

to be honest, sounds like sky sports and quickflix might be my best bet. oh wait sky locks you in too. and it wont play on my windows phone.

"Lock" in which way? You can cancel or pause your Netflix subscription at any time.

Everyone is making wild guesses around content etc...the reality is no one knows how much Netflix or any other SVOD service pays for content or how 'it' really works. And no service will tick all of your boxes. I bet they will launch a very competitive service. I can't imagine Netflix being happy to be the 2nd or 3rd best option in NZ. If they are launching here they will want the biggest piece of the cake. I'm excited to see what they offer but I'm very happy with my current US sub and probably won't change.

Content wont be huge, but hopefully on a par with Lightbox (or slightly better).
I'm picking 12.99-15.00 per month (AU will be $10/month).
Launch 31 March.
